I have 7 bulldogs and 5 cats; and I have to say - dogs are 1,000x more fun than cats. Granted cats kill mice and flies; but still.
My cat was an indoors cat and she never killed a bird or mouse in her life. I don't think even my outside cats did. As for your question, IMO, they're both special in their own unique way. I've loved both.
It depends on the animal's personality. Dogs are more needy generally so if you want a pet to be needy, dogs are yours. Cats generally are less needy. Of course there are exceptions. We have both as well. I think kittens are cooler than puppies though. They have a much more active curiosity at that age.
