They are on the border of Independent Novo Russia Republic, and are there to protect the fledgling nation from Ukrainian nationalist aggression.

It doesn't have to be recognized it is defacto independent. Just like it took time for Kosovo to be recognized. Russia is protecting Novo Russians from Ukranian aggression like NATO protected Albanians from Serb aggression.

If those were "volunteers," I don't see why they'd be amassed at the border, apparently quite visible to anyone with the means to look, instead of in Eastern Ukraine.

The USA wasn't recognised by Great Britain in the beginning, either, but the Revolutionary War eventually settled the matter.

First of all it's Reuters which is part of the corporate news, so everything they write should be taken with a grain of salt. Also they quoted Kiev and its Western allies, and these are the same ones that have accused Russia of one hundred and one invasions. Hmmm, I did read the parking situation in Kiev is so bad that the Russian tanks are all piled on one another.

unlike RT, Sputnik, and greekdefensenet, Reuters is legitimate and trustworthy news.

"As the Soviet Union was disintegrating a quarter of a century ago, the 'evil empire’s' foreign affairs advisor Georgy Arbatov said to the then-U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott — “we are doing something terrible to you: we are depriving you of an enemy.”

"That’s no longer true. Russia, the Soviet Union’s successor state, is now an enemy, if still a cold one. Its seizing of parts of Ukraine; its threats to the Baltic states; its probing of NATO defenses at sea and in the air; its relentless propaganda against the West — all at the bidding of President Vladimir Putin — leave no doubts."

Actually, I have a few doubts about NATO's eastward expansion after the Evil Empire's fall, US missile defense in Poland, and why elites in the US decided to make 2014 the worst year for US-Russian relations since Gorbachev came to power?

The current US defense budget is just under $600 billion vs about $80 billion for Russia. That's over a 7 to1 spending ratio. Don't you think that's enough?

Pure silliness, the apples to oranges comparison...What do we get for our 7 to 1...WE are reducing the size of our military while the Russians are growing theirs...When we can use minimum wage no union labor to build scores of ships and hundreds of aircraft every decade, then we will be speaking apples to apples...

I'd call it pretty good sarcasm if I did not have a sneaking suspicion that you are serious.

Russia is pretty slick. They sold off the US debt, tested the waters in Crimea and Ukraine; and now that Nobama showed his ability to pee his pants Putin has the green light to make USSR II. If Putin is smart, he will take over all of eastern Europe before Hitlery Clintard gets here. She might not be as easy as the present Negro In Chief.

Apples and oranges. Russia has a huge conscription based army which is free, a huge part of the US defence budget is salaries, pensions, benefits etc. Lest we forget that the standard of living in Russia is several times lower and the cost of independent contractors or businesses that may be hired by the Russian military is correspondingly significantly lower. Economy 101.

If we could cancel entitlements and cash injections for black inner city ghettos like Baltimore, we could take that $350 billion and feed it into weapons purchases. If we had a few million more cruise missiles and drones we could really wreak some serious havoc!

Oh no! They're going to get themselves killed! I heard the Russian troop's body count is rising high in their secret cross-border war against Ukraine.

Is that what they are saying on TASS? Because the way I (and the rest of the entire planet Earth) heard it, USAF is the biggest air force, followed by US Navy. The ruskies come in at a piddly #3. USA total combat aircraft is 3,400. The Borscht eaters - 1,800. In fact, we have almost as many F16 Falcons as Russia has total aircraft. From a naval perspective, USA has 3 carriers in the build phase, 10 in service, and 2 in the reserve fleet (and 56 carriers decomissioned). Ruskie pickle sniffers have 1. ROFLMAO. One aircraft carrier! BWAHAHAHAHA Underwater, USA has 72 operational submarines. Feeble little Russia; 55.
