I am glad that I ran into an article a few years ago that explained more about the critical role that President Truman had in the creation of the state of Israel.

I find this to be quite moving really!

What do you think about these assertions?

In the latest issue of Books & Culture, a Christian book review monthly, Gerald McDermott details the role of Truman's Southern Baptist faith in his Israel policy. While mainline Protestants (with some important exceptions, such as Schlesinger's friend Reinhold Niebuhr) tended to disparage Zionist hopes for a Jewish state, religious conservatives (a group that included people like Truman who were not necessarily political conservatives) rejoiced in Zionist aspirations as the fulfillment of prophecy and the just restoration of the Jewish homeland which God had promised the Jews by sacred covenant. We are told by a witness that, "On hearing these words, Truman rose from his chair and, with great emotion, tears glistening in his eyes, he turned to the Chief Rabbi and asked him if his actions for the sake of the Jewish people were indeed to be interpreted thus and the hand of the Almighty was in the matter." A few months later, retired President Truman was honored at the Jewish Theological Seminary. "Sometime in the late 1950s, that world-class gossip and occasional historian, John F. Kennedy, told me (Gore Vidal) how, in 1948, Harry S. Truman had been pretty much abandoned by everyone when he came to run for president. Then an American Zionist brought him two million dollars in cash, in a suitcase, aboard his whistle-stop campaign train. 'That's why our recognition of Israel was rushed through so fast.' As neither Jack nor I was an antisemite (unlike his father and my grandfather) we took this to be just another funny story about Truman and the serene corruption of American politics."

Preface

“God’s Peace for the Holy Land*”? Isn’t that a presumptuous title? Please allow

me to explain. First, since the sacred books of Judaism, Christianity and Islam

provide the guidelines supporting this solution, and since I wasn’t the one who

wrote them, calling them “God’s” seems fair. That’s why the words “presented by”

precede my name on the title page. Second, this book in no way proselytizes or

puts one religion above another. Nor does it openly or subtly encourage anyone to

convert to anything. What it does is take into account something without which

attaining peace in the Holy Land (Israel/Palestine) will forever be unattainable.

That “something” is the sacred messages delivered to each of the peoples involved

in the dispute. In this case, referencing the sacred books is more than some dry,

scholarly exercise or even a gesture of courtesy. Without taking the sacred books

into account, peace in the Holy Land will be near, if not completely, impossible.

The Bermigo Plan In A Nutshell

The Bermigo Plan would be a deal between the Palestinians and Western democracies – and between Israel and the Western democracies. No deal between Israel and Palestine, themselves.

The West would offer the Palestinians a customized Marshall Plan with many innovations. Among its dozens of components and sub-components:
The West would invest in a new state of Palestine on a Marshall-Plan scale. Thousands of Western professionals would live and work among the Palestinians, overseeing a 25-year venture – respectfully, but firmly.

This package would have critical mass in the three major realms a Marshall Plan needs to succeed; economics, security, and installation of democratic governance.
The venture would be a partnership, not some re-colonization program. By the 3rd year of the enterprise, Palestine would get internationally recognized independence.
No traffic would cross the Israel-Palestine border for the 1st 15 years of the plan to protect the venture from provocateurs and retaliation before wounds had begun to heal. A 75,000-strong multinational force would monitor/enforce this provision on the Palestine side; the Israeli army would ensure compliance on the Israel side.
The multinational force would also help build a single, professional Palestine police force and national guard to replace the motley militias. [Polls show that this provision would be supported by over 90% of Palestinians – a critical finding, since the militants have never countered the overriding will of their public. Also note that the Palestinians are ethnically and religiously homogeneous (98% of Palestinians are Sunni Muslim); a very far cry from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Afghanistan, et al].

Israel would evacuate settlements from 95% of the West Bank. This would take place during the first year of the plan. [See Choosing The 5% That Israel Would Retain for the methodology that would determine which 5% would remain in Israeli hands]. The Israeli army would withdraw completely from the 95% six months later.

The Old City of Jerusalem would become an independent mini-city. Its charter would have a mechanism that smoothly ensured a demographic change to 44% Palestinian Muslim, 44% Jewish, and 12% Christian (from the current ratio of 76%, 12% and 12%). A common misassumption about the Bermigo package — perhaps stemming from a bevy of ‘interim’ peace plans proposed through the years — is that it, too, foresees a final peace agreement being signed once its 25-year term is up. No, this plan does not aspire to an undoable vision; it is purposely comfortable enough to be lived with indefinitely. All that happens after the 25 years is the role of the Western participant countries ends — unless at that time, both sides want the West to continue with a few duties. There are many examples of two neighboring countries interacting peacefully without formal relations.

The Bermigo prototype is the fruit of many years of research, and has earned the respect of nearly all experts who have reviewed it in depth. The next step is to conduct a comprehensive poll among the Palestinian public to see if indeed most Palestinians would support it, and critically, to see if opponents could at least live with it.
There is a strong chance they might – which would make the Bermigo Plan the only proposal that remotely falls into that category. Moreover, since this plan would not be materially more costly to Israel than the conventional approach, a poll that showed across-the-board Palestinian support (or at least, acquiescence) would constitute an incalculable breakthrough.

I am hopeful that as truly courageous people such as Barbro Karlen tell their stories….. the citizens of Israel will come to view their enemies very differently.

A high percentage of Jewish scholars do understand that reincarnation fits well with the Jewish scriptures but………… the implications of all this toward Gentiles and Muslims hasn't fully sank in yet.

Uri Avnery offered his plan for a Semitic Union decades ago which called for a federation of Israel/Palestine/Jordan, but such a solution seems even more unlikely today than it did then.

(R.M.)"First off, Palestine was composed of what is today Israel, the West Bank & Gaza, AND present-day Jordan. Jordan alone is 34,495 mi². Israel today is 8,019 mi². That doesn't include the West Bank (2,178 mi²) and Gaza (139 mi²) . What would be more accurate to say is that Israel was given about 14% of Palestine. The "56%" refers to percentage Israel was allocated from a piece of land roughly 1/8 of Palestine. Further, a large percentage of the land given to Israel was considered wasteland, i.e., the Negev. Of select, readily arable land, the percentage is much closer to 1/3 within the Holy Land.
I suppose it's fair to say that every increasing inch allocated to Israel would have added to the level of discontent among Muslims, but as any knowledgeable and fair-minded person knows, it didn't matter how much land Israel was given, because the principle upon which Muslims were objecting would not allow one square inch of land to be ceded to Israel. Once one looks at how the land was apportioned from the perspective of land-value, one can easily see that it was fairly allocated. Like, Party A gets 1 acre of good farmland, Party B gets 1/2 acre of good farmland plus an acre of desert. Once land-value is added to the equation, the land was fairly allocated to both groups.
The other major argument concerning fairness of the allocating of the land shares concerns whether Jewish Israelis had any indigenous right to be there in the first place. Of course, both sides have claimed that the other side isn't indigenous. Rather than make this issue take another 20 or so pages, why not try reading chapters 2 & 3 of GPP. (R. M.): "OK. Rather than (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)foot around, what are we really talking about here? How does one define the national self-interest of the USA? What did the people of the USA stand to lose by alienating Muslims of the Middle East? Did Americans and Muslims have deep-rooted and widely shared cultural bonds of friendship? No. So, what stood to be lost has to do with OIL. And power derived from OIL.

Once one understands that the allocations of the land had a moral basis, then the only basis left for supporting Mr. Phillips' view of American self-interest is economic--money and power associated with money--and has little if anything to do with morality. So, taking into consideration that Mr. Phillips appealed partially on the basis of "fairness" (which fails), his argument is actually limited to basing American self-interest, and policies proceeding from this, strictly on economic benefit to be derived for the USA from them. Basically, a completely amoral classic-godless-capitalism perspective. Using purely short-term selfishness as the basis for "self-interest", Mr. Phillips' view is impeccable. Except for this: the USA is supposedly founded upon all sorts of wonderful humanitarian ideals. By definition, the USA stands for those humanitarian ideals, and thus people who try to formulate policy without them are in fact not working for the real interest of the nation, but for the short-term pocketbooks of people who say they're proud citizens of the USA while standing for something entirely different.

It would be patently dishonest to say that Israel, or people who support Israel, have not tried to influence the USA govt. They certainly have. However, to say that it isn't in the best interests of the USA to live up to the ideals it's supposed to stand for, and instead define self-interest only in terms of greed and selfishness is something we may disagree on." It's my understanding Transjordan was never a part of Palestine as it related to the creation of a Jewish homeland. That homeland was also required to come into existence without prejudicing the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine.

(R.M.):…."I agree with George on this. Under the present situation, those 1/2 million settlers are not about to agree to move out. However, times and situations change, and what is impossible at one time becomes inevitable at another.
This is why Matthew 24 was written into the prophecies. As matters stand, both sides are heading for an impasse and inevitable violence. Israel cannot accept the ICC trying to arrest their soldiers whenever they respond to rockets fired from Gaza or other populated areas, nor will they accept international economic sanctions without turning around and making Palestinians pay a horrible price for it. Neither can Palestinian leadership permit things to go on indefinitely this way--eventually the people will revolt and war will break out then.

How sad it is that the one solution that has the power to address the arguments of both sides that are based on religion. How sad that a solution with the power to influence key elements of both populations that presently call for war, and turn them to peace, cannot gain the traction it needs to bring people to their senses before the oncoming calamity arrives. However, in the brief respite before the outside world gets militarily involved, the situation will change to one in which both peoples in the Holy Land will realize they're both going to be destroyed in the battle taking shape. That's about time they'll be willing to listen to their Creator, because they'll be praying for an answer,

Georgephillip……. I deeply appreciate your highly informed comments and questions on this topic.

One thing that I know for certain is that a majority of the Palestinian people would have preferred that President Yassar Arafat had invested that nearly one billion dollars that he had saved by the time of his death in such a way that they had had more food…….. and better living conditions.

I personally am promoting a new way of looking at many questions in the Middle East. For one…… I believe that one of the most brilliant opening gambits against climate change is elaborated on in an ancient Islamic prophecy.

Did you know that there is an Islamic prophecy that the Islamic desert regions would be turned green in the latter days?????

This topic is of special interest to me because I live about a hundred miles from the Bay of Fundy. I live five kms from the ocean on the eastern part of Nova Scotia. In my area the difference between low tide to high tide is about one meter! The land form of the Bay of Fundy has a funnelling effect on tidal waters and so parts of the Fundy have a difference of fifteen to seventeen meters between low to high tide!

The question on my mind would be if ocean levels were to rise about thirty centimeters in my part of Nova Scotia, would they rise by four or five meters along parts of the Fundy????

There are 143,000 acres of farmland taken back from the Fundy by dikes that are probably in the position of the proverbial canary in a coal mine in relation to rising ocean levels!

Every cubic meter of H2O added to the water table of nations in the Middle EAst will NOT be on top of New Orleans, Florida, Holland, Bangladesh or those 143,000 acres along the Fundy!!!!!

I felt a huge sense of relief when I first heard about The Sahara Forest Project!

If mankind is on earth during next ice age (signs from it already there, like Golf-stream slowing down 20% in last five years period, some scientist predict that Britain might have climate of Alaska in next 20 years), deserts of Arabs (Sahara+Middle-East) is going to be green, as they were during last ice age when black Africans inhabited even nowadays deserts of Libya. This has been mentioned in prophecy and hadith of prophet Mohammed (puh), as he said that "deserts of Arabs will once again be filled with rivers and gardens". Noticeably here is for example satellite pictures taken from Saudi-Arabian desert, In these pictures anyone can clearly see old river streams going under desert, and from there founded remains of gardens and agricultural activity. So Mohammed knew without proofs that during last ice age area was green, And so it will be during next ice age after change in climate and rainfalls. But this prophecy does not exclude possibility that humans themselves could make them green, as their actions would anyway be originated from Allah, and it could happen this way:

I am almost certain that the least expensive way to protect vulnerable cities like New Orleans from rising ocean levels may be large scale desalination of ocean water in the Middle East and North Africa.

Every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated and eventually seeps down into the water table of another nation will not be putting pressure on the oceans to flood New Orleans, The Netherlands, Bangladesh or Florida.

One large projects like the Sahara Forest Project or the Sahara Solar Breeder Project are operational….. then many smaller projects like the Permaculture project in Jordan could spring up within a few kilometres of these larger projects.

I have got to find his film about how simply getting farms to NOT burn the stocks from the previous year's crop….. but instead use them as a mulch that holds in water…… can profoundly alter how we view the possibility of turning deserts green.

I am almost positive that President Donald J. Trump, for all his many flaws, is in a position to become another
fulfillment of the role of a metaphorical Gentile King Cyrus type of political leader.

President Trump and P. M. Benjamin Netanyahu have many reasons why they should seriously
discuss the option to rebuild the Jerusalem Third Temple for either of the two years, 2070 or
maybe even 2030.

They should both also discuss the option of bringing the remains of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov from
the Ukraine to somewhere in Israel.

Nice story but, I do not believe Truman could be bought.
He left the Presidency so poor "they" had to pass a special retirement for him avoiding the embarrassment of an ex president living in relative poverty.

but it is also possible that he knew that if he accepted the money that he could make the world a better place by investing it into becoming President.

He came to regret the establishment of Israel. In his letters to Eleanor Roosevelt he despaired that people who have been bullied become bullies.

I do not believe he ever considered himself beyond the Senate.
