Hopefully they can turn them into wilderness parks where humans can enjoy the nature too. I advocate dual use areas, although of course it is important to have unspoiled areas too.

I have to admit that it doesn't surprise me.

    How appropriate !

If it were not for NATO, Germany as we know it today would be an extinct species under the totalitarian Fascist Soviet jack-boot run from Moscow.

This reminds me of nature reserves created by the open-cast mining companies, that get their licence to mine on the condition to return the land to something beautiful, once the coal is exhausted.

Now that Soviet & Russian aggression has been defeated the coast to return the land to something beautiful is well worth the cost to have prevented a Russian domination of our national homeland.

And to boot we have even defeated Soviet thinking when we defeated the trade Union monopoly in the UK to free ourselves of all Russian cancer of the body politic.
