I don't care at all about homosexuality, be gay, don't be gay, get married, don't get married! I'm just happy gay marriage passed, why? Basically I am hoping and praying to get it off the news and move on to important issues that I care about, I just want to be done with it.

 

Gay marriage, as well as just gayness in general, gives conservative pols a chance to be real asshats in the eyes of just about anyone who's not like that themselves. People who are like that get to see themselves as beleaguered martyrs defending civilization from the fabulous hordes. People who aren't that way get to notice what asshats people who are that way are. It doesn't cost anything and much merriment ensues. Hell, it's a wonder they don't do it all the time...oh....wait.

 

Given that my anti-"SSM" posting continues unabated, and that Obergefell has not attenuated the supply of imbeciles trying to get me to believe, figuratively speaking, that a diamond and a dunghill are one and the same, I confess I'm hard pressed to understand why I should believe nobody cares what I think.

I think "news" for the most part is intentionally inflammatory and divisive....Entertainment more than news...I honestly can hardly fathom an unbiased report on anything. Can you?

 

I can understand why southern Christian conservatives might think morality is devolving. Among other things, it's become politically incorrect to beat your wife these days.

 

Maybe some people do care what you think. Politicians care what the masses think, even when what they think is idiotic.
I suppose my initial point was the protests and criticism of homosexuality in America are as relevant and productive as protests and criticism of divorce, illegitimacy, pornography, abortion, prohibition, etc....

I think you misunderstood. Race has little biological basis, in the sense that there are no known barriers to breeding. There are physical differences between what we see as races, that make medical differences in some rare cases, and of course there are histories of evolution in different geographical areas without much gene dispersion to other breeding populations for long enough to lead to visible differences. But oveall, visibility aside, these physical differences are almost entirely cosmetic.

EXCEPT, as I think you are saying, cosmetic differences might be physiologically insignficant, but they are socially critical. It's human nature to polarize Us against Them (see the homosexual threads, see the bitter divisions in Ireland, where except for religion the people are as alike as peas in a pod). And visible differences make polarization easy, so we "find" racial superiority or inferiority along visible lines, cosmetic as they may be. We "make up the racial construct" for the PURPOSE of finding ourselves superior to others we regard as not part of our in-group (AKA the "good guys").

The Irish example was important, because it tells us that if we were to take a population of people as similar to one another as people can possibly get, and put them all togehter in one place, they would discover or invent or manufacture SOME difference, real or imagined - and THEN they'd fight to the death over it!

By Jove, I think you've got it. You are citing self-fulfilling fears. Like when the US stock market crashes over Greece, NOT because Greece matters at all to the market, but because all the investors are betting that all the OTHER investors are going to panic, and so they all panic.

As my example of the Irish illustrated, you can't eradicate racism. People WILL find differences. The point was that people will fabricate differences that don't exist if they must, in order to differentiate Us from Them. And as I said, people will be willing to fight to the death over even imaginary differences, it's that important to us.
