"A woman angling for a prosperous career in Hollywood was shot in the back of the head and killed Sunday night, police said.

Carrie Jean Melvin, 30, was walking with her boyfriend toward Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles’ famed entertainment industry hub at around 10 p.m. when a man with a shotgun snuck up behind the couple and shot her, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Melvin died at the scene, and her killer jumped into a black sedan and fled, KTLA-TV reported. No suspects had been arrested on Monday night, and investigators are seeking information on the shooter, who police described as an African-American male in his 20s wearing a hood over his head, according to KNBC-TV.

The gunman didn't say anything to Melvin or her boyfriend, and he sped away without setting his sights on anyone else in the area, which is only blocks from the tourist-filled intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave., Det. John Skaggs told the Los Angeles Times.

Investigators are trying to figure out why the suspect would have targeted the aspiring actress, writer and entrepreneur alone for the vicious attack.

“We just don’t know,” Skaggs told the Times. “On the one hand, she didn’t have any known enemies. On the other hand, it looks like it was directed toward her...We’re looking at all angles.”

Melvin, whose LinkedIn page says she acts, models, produces and writes in addition to being the CEO of a social media marketing company, had moved to L.A. four years ago to pursue her dreams, according to the Times. The UC Santa Cruz grad waited tables and bartended on the side, her father told the newspaper.

“She was really kind of spreading her wings,” said Bernie Melvin. “It’s an extreme loss to us. She had a lot to give, and her life was cut short.”

And why was the Zimmerman case all over the news and this isn't? Was the life of essentially, lets say it, a LOSER, more important than this girl? So why is it when white people shoot black people, its news, but when black people shoot white people, you just don't really see it at prime time at all. Weird. Strange. Wonder why? Care to guess? Any Democrats care to be honest. We've seen a few cases mentioned on the board today and you know what, I haven't seen any on the news tonight.

You're right to a degree, but it sounds like the girl was targeted and the guy used a shotgun. Sounds like a amateur posing as a pro. Money says this guy is caught relatively soon unless he's a random thrill shooter. Houston had a random shooter not so long ago, but I'm not sure what happened to him. Where he was playing the locals might have solved the problem themselves.
