'Average' can be a very misleading figure. For example I was looking at some statistics form income awhile ago and the 'average' income for working Australians was $60,000 per year but digging a little deeper I found more than 60% of Australians actually earnt less than $40,000. Averages often bear no resemblance to the real world.

 

Of course they don't, they are averages. Statistics, they are the only way you can assess some values. It for example would be impossible to pay the pension based on every individuals circumstances and life contribution.

The same way as superannuation is grossly unfair. Take a talented doctor, he can go into private practice and make sqillions, or he can go into public health and do research and get paid a salary. There is no incentive other than making as much money as possible.

Statistics. We have average (or mean). Also useful are range and median. I'm no statistician or mathematician and have no particular knowledge apart from the fact that the mean is not all that informative, as has been pointed out in this thread. I think measuring wealth in Australia is best plotted on a sort of graph. Gut feeling most of us are not wealthy, a few of us are and fewer still are immensely wealthy. That didn't take much work though did it?

We are not wealthy ... my God, we do not know what poverty is in this country. Go to the US and you see poverty, go to third world countries and you see abject poverty. Watched a documentary about an African country where the 15 year old daughter is totally responsible for her three younger siblings as her parents were all killed. She gets one kilo of corn meal a week to feed them.

Go to countries where a disabled child is a benefit as you can put them out to beg.

We could take a hundred thousand people in on what we spend on Easter Eggs (around 2 billion) or gambling or pet food or red wine. We sit here whining about not having any money yet we find it to spend on crap for ourselves.
