The USA has a long history of people arriving pennliess in the US and within a generation becoming middle class and yet with EVERY possible help including being allowed into college at grades whioch would stop other, handouts, welfare, affimataive action etc etc blacks just can;t suceed are they just thick or have an ingrained culture of failure
What makes you so sure there is such a great difference in success (however you’re measuring it) of immigrants and black Americans?
I wish you hadn't said blacks, because this could be a very interesting discussion. Instead it will be reported and closed. Until then... I have also noticed how often we hear about immigrants who come here with only change in their pockets and work themselves into a lifestyle of success and comfort. Yet we have American poor (all colors) who do nothing but milk the system, choose a life of welfare, or fake work-stopping injuries to live off the government.... then demand more. It's pathetic.
No offense, but you can only speak for your country. In this (USA) country, there are many poor black people, but there are also plenty middle class and wealthy black people. Also, in this country most welfare doesn't go disproportionately to blacks. Maybe housing, and all that, but compared to what other benefactors get in welfare, it really is a drop in the bucket. The minority groups most helped by afirmative action are Jews & Asians. Hope this doesnt fall on deaf ears .
One word...... Work ethics. Opps.....two words! - - - Updated - - - Proof? Or do we just go by your word? PS.......leave corporate welfare out of your answer.
Jews and Asian benefit from affirmative qction? what utter rubbish/, Asians are utterly discriminated against in University admittance. proof please of your nonsense.
Because they rather sit on the couch and complain that everything isn't just given to them, expecting a pay check for doing nothing . While other immigrants go out and get what they need to survive. Sime work ethic.
In the early colonial days, most white immigrants from Britain and Ireland arrived as indentured servants but they were freed after five years with rewards like land and money upon completing their services, becoming small land-owners themselves. But African slaves were not that lucky and even after they were emancipated in the 1860s, the system of racial segregation kept them out of decent education and job opportunities until the 1960s.
What is the excuse for poor Whites in the USA? You know, those who live in Appalachia and other parts of the South, etc? If you can find out why they are still poor, you'll know why some Blacks are still poor also.
Same reasons: bad schools, subsidies for out of wedlock births, subsidies for the able and idle, minimum wage ...
Being White should help them. - - - Updated - - - You probably have a point. So being born in the USA is not always a clear path to wealth as the OP seems to suggest. Thank you. - - - Updated - - - I have a regular AmEx card. Should I apply for the upgrade?
I suppose we should be grateful that there is any path at all left for them, but today the odds are stacked against those born into the carefully crafted poverty client hoods of American society.
Where are the statistics across the last 125 years that tells us the ratio of success and how that success is actually defined for "penniless immigrants" and black people(what if the black person is an immigrant too?? And penniless?!?)? How do you factor in slavery and post-slavery oppressive laws against black people? There were various forms of slavery used on different groups of peoples in our country's history(the Chinese and the Irish come to mind), not just black people, but black people are really the only group that had the force of the law against them in many places well into the 20th century. Is there actual data here or is this more about historical narratives that may or may not even be true?
Thank you, Junkieturtle, for bringing up all these excellent points. - - - Updated - - - No thanks. I 'll stick with my Affirmative Action card.
