Well they’re not actually “black” or “holes” either but you’d have to be as dumb as a bag or rocks not to understand that these are all similes.

Hair is a common phrase used about black holes. It really refers to any measurable feature, which by the definition of a black hole has to be positioned outside the black hole.

I'm glad you're reading stuff from Hawkins (and I hope other scientists, too).

I think theoretical physics is nothing more than a gigantic bowl of conjecture...

I also think Hawking has lost his mind and has zero credibility beyond what people give him just because of his name...

    Theoretical physics is garbage....

In theory it's possible for me to jump and fly to the moon.... What a lot of people don't realize is that just because something is possible in theory doesn't mean it's attainable...

Who gives a (*)(*)(*)(*) about Hawking?

    The guy speaks garbage....

This dude denied black holes existed, now they have "hairs" which I'm assuming he means strings as in string theory.

The guy is like the fool that cant decide what to order when in a restaurant....

Hawking has caused significant progress in physics. There isn't any foundation for your disrespect.

No, I don't think that's what he means at all.

Read the article. The issues surrounding the idea of loss of information is the point here, I think. This has been one of the several big deals in physics - an area where Hawking has published papers.

Theoretical physics - don't forget "theoretical"....

    He has proven nothing....

Science does not deal in proof.

    No (*)(*)(*)(*)....

I could show you an alien and "scientists" would still reject the notion aliens exist because in their minds it's impossible...

For all you know I'm a robot....

So perhaps we should stop calling evolution or (*)(*)(*)(*) like AGW (especially) "proven science"??

Honestly there is more denial in science than there is understanding or open mindedness or open discussion.....

Jee-sus! Is there nothing the charlatans can say which is preposterous enough to make you question it? 'Hair is a common phrase'! :wall:

There are two kinds of science - real science and opportunistic faux science, and ne'er the twain shall meet!

I suspect that the gravitas he's being given is a kind of sympathy for his disability. In fact after reading somewhere he uses his sense of humour to cope with it, maybe much of what he's saying should be taken with a pinch of salt?

Actually there might even be a sexual connotation here? [IMG]

There are plenty of things they could say that I wouldn't buy it. Hairs, however, is an established analogue.

So whaddya think of my 'sexual connotation' theory then? You must admit it works.

He's made significant progress in bringing together the general theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.

Both are of practical relevance today - as well as the larger theoretical issues.

There is absolutely no doubt that Hawkings is a giant of physics.

I can't pretend that I have any idea what you're talking about.
