ISIS had retreated into Syria as long ago as 2006. Not exactly the same as "Emerging". This story just makes the picture more foggy as far as I can tell. That we supported opposition groups is accepted as truth on most fronts. Bashar Al Assad treats his political opposition lethally, he's never been one for discussion. That some of the opposition groups would be fundamentalist muslims is no big shocker, religion and politics go together as often as not in the middle east. Jumping to the conclusion that these groups would ally with ISIS forces within Syria seems like something more obvious in retrospect from what little I know.
