"Dog kills owner in Cumbria. The dog who attacked the male was destroyed. Three other dogs were seized from the property and will be assessed by a specialised police officer."

Oh the sweet irony of it? You'd need to have a heart of stone not to laugh!!

What a way to go though? I'll bet he was thinking, as lumps of flesh and muscle were being torn from him, 'Wish I'd bought a Chihuahua now!'

This story is so very incomplete as to be incoherent, so is your commentary.

This one isn't so funny . . . yet another child savaged to death:

"Shocked neighbours in Halstead, Essex could hear "agonising screams for a good five minutes" coming from inside the house before the blood-soaked animal emerged"

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/essex-dog-attack-death-young-8662103

Five whole minutes of undiluted pain - it must have seemed an eternity. How many more children must be killed like this!!

I suppose you missed the part of very rare incidents.
You never hear the other part of the story, like the toddler that was kicking the hell out of my dog, my dog hid behind my legs and the toddler started kicking me in my legs, I yelled at his parents to control their child.

Oh yes, you mean the one-in-a-million exception to the rule! :wall: You're obviously one of these individuals who loves dogs and hates children; who justifies dog mess on the pavements by citing sweep wrappings discarded by children. I know your sort, and conclude you're the archetypal dog obsessive/child hater.

    Uh....are you okay, mate?

That's all this story is, is what it seems? Some bloke being killed by his own pooch doesn't really seem like the height of hilarious irony you seem to think it is. In fact, I'd be careful of letting others know where I got my jollies, were I you.

Unless, as often happens, I'm missing something here. Again, care to go into this a little further?

Some dogs are naturally protective of children and will let themselves be injured rather than hurt one. Others are not. I've lost count of how many times I have seen a neighbor go by with this mastiff straining at the leash to attack my children playing in the yard. Animals like that are as dangerous as Tigers and their ownership should be similarly restrictive.

Exactly, and I can't understand the mentality of anyone who wants one. All I can think is they must be seriously inadequate individuals, and having a dog like that makes them feel better about themselves. The fact that one day their dog will kill someone is neither here nor there to these cretins.

If he'd survived the dog would have been destroyed. Then when he recovered he'd have acquired another one, and the strong possibility is that the second one would kill a baby, a child, a stranger, and it might be your baby, your child, your wife, you? It's no way to die for anyone. Now he won't?? He made his decision, and he died by it rather than anyone else, and that's fine by me.

Actually here's an apposite question for you, AU, seeing as you live next door to what you rightly describe as the equivalent of a tiger - would you rather that dog killed its owner, or one of your children?

Not at all, You added much additional commentary, completely untrue, I do not love dogs or hate children, You have told untruths, I do not condone mistreatment of humans or animals.

Please tell me exactly where my additional commentary was untrue - I never tell untruths, and if you don't tell me I shall expect an apology.

You told me I hate children, A LIE !

I would kill My dog, rather than let it hurt any children.

I would not have a vicious dog anyway, he is very docile and submissive with other dogs and people.

    See ?

I do not excuse pet droppings on the sidewalks or pavement or anywhere, or cite sweep / sweet wrappings as an excuse, I have used doggy dropping bags over 40 years !

    I do not hate children.

    You should apologize to me.

    ***************************************

If My dog acted like that or did that, to any Children, with a very heavy heart, I would give him a HUGE dose of Morphine and send him off......

I want a barky doggy that lets me know when people are about.

I also want him friendly, My doggy is pushing 10 years old now, I doubt he will change, also, he is very smart.

Once, he alerted me to a bloke that was going to mash me in the head with a bat by barking loudly and standing in his way.

He did not try to bite the bloke, he only prevented him from getting to me.

And I do apologize to you, unreservedly. Because of the adverse effect selfish dog owners have inflicted on to my erstwhile hobby (distance walking), and their abject aggression on the times I've confronted them - which incidents range from fear of an off-leash imminent canine attack to 'playfully' jumping onto me and covering my clothing in mud - my default position is that they're all the same unless they prove to be otherwise, and that obviously isn't easy to prove? I don't alter my position, but I will admit that there are exceptions, and taking you at your word accept readily that you are obviously one (of the exceptions). I herewith reiterate my apology.

I have chosen to no longer indulge my love of walking because the enjoyment has exponentially been off-set by the almost constant confrontations.

I do know people with big aggressive dogs who don't take proper care of them and, yes, I think people who live around such should be able to do something proactively to prevent themselves and their children from being eaten someday, however, I would limit it to a visit from animal control, or a small fine at most. I think death by mauling is right much, don't you?

There are people who have big, aggressive breeds that wouldn't hurt a fly, and you have to factor in how people come to have the animals, who are often orphaned because their owners can't take care of them, then again that's just the problem; dogs like this do take a lot of care and people should realize that before they get one.

You do have something of a point in that there is not much too bad to be done to people like Michael Vic, who purposely kept dogs for fighting. IMO, if he was the person under discussion it would be perfectly proper to let his dogs have their day with him.

Such as? I can't think of a way other than to stay indoors? [IMG] I'll be interested to hear your suggestions though??

I've lost count of the number of times I've heard that trite riposte after an attack by a dog 'Go on, you can stroke him - he wouldn't hurt a fly/Well he's never done it (savaged a person) before!' :wall: Dogs are like humans - some are psychotic and will attack for no apparent reason and at any time. Trust me I know, because I was closely involved with Alsatians for 4 years - and that's in addition to what I've read about attacks, as I'd guess you have.

There's every probability that the owner of this dog was 'a Michael Vic' - organised dog fighting is as commonplace here as it is the US. These incidents are happening far too often, and I'm really surprised that you think 'a small fine at most' will prevent them!

ps I don't think you answered my questions as to who you'd prefer to be killed by a dog - its owner or one of your children. I don't blame you for not answering (I didn't expect you to actually, because it was only a rhetorical question to stir your imagination) because the very thought of it being the latter is too awful to contemplate even for me, never mind yourself as the child's parent??
