If Gorilla's Death Moves You, Consider Other Animals' Plights
June 4, 2016 - The shooting death of Harambe, the 17-year-old western lowland gorilla, after a four-year-old boy fell into his cage at the Cincinnati Zoo, is a tragedy in all ways. Harambe delighted zoo-goers, and may have meant the boy no harm.

The little boy's parents say they are grateful their son survived and is doing well. But many people on social media platforms have attacked the mother as neglectful. Wayne Pacelle, president of the Humane Society said on his blog that the debate over how Harambe died reminds him of old dorm room discussions where people would pose imaginary questions that weighed the life of an animal against a human being's. But if some of the people who snarl at the boy's parents on social media want to do something more for animals, they may need to look no further than their own dinner.

We have heard a lot in recent years about the 8.5 billion chickens that are slaughtered for food in the United States every year. The ones that live on factory farms are kept in cages about as large as a sheet of copy paper. Their feet never touch the ground. They never see the sun or sky. They never play or mate. Their beaks are often snipped or burned off to keep them from pecking each other to death in those cramped, congested cages. Harambe's death might also remind us how more than 100 million pigs are raised for food in the United States. The ASPCA points out that pigs, who are known to be as intelligent as dogs, are one of the few animals Americans both keep as pets and raise for food.

Most pigs are kept in windowless sheds on factory farms, in cages so small they cannot turn around; so they will grow fat. They live in their own manure, and the air is so heavy with ammonia that many pigs develop lesions on their lungs. Female breeding pigs are put into what are called gestation crates, where they are artificially inseminated. They give birth, then are inseminated time and time again; and when they can longer get pregnant, they're slaughtered.

We could go on. But it is not necessary to become a vegetarian to change what we eat to consume fewer animals, which is probably healthier anyway. What happened to Harambe was a catastrophe, but one so rare as to be almost unprecedented. The treatment of so many millions of animals raised for food can be just business as usual.

They were detained and released on bail on Friday. Federal officials filed the charges after 40 dead tiger cubs were found in a freezer at the Buddhist temple, the deputy chief of the country's parks and wildlife department said. Other items discovered included "two pieces of tiger skin, eight to nine pieces of tiger teeth and about 800 to 900 'Ta Krud,' and we are currently looking around the temple for more suspicious items," said Tuenjai Noochdumrong, the director of Thailand's Wildlife Conservation Office (WCO), a division of the DNP. (She is married to Adisorn Noochdumrong.) "Ta Krud" are small containers with pieces of tiger skin, mostly worn as pendants around the neck by people with the superstitious belief that by wearing them they will become invincible.

Officers reported they found a pendant containing tiger skin in the room of the temple's chief monk, whose whereabouts are currently unknown.
The Tiger Temple fired back on Facebook, denying claims that it possessed tiger skin. "The recent discovery of the tiger skins and necklaces comes as a shock to us as well as the rest of the world. We are disgusted at this discovery and we don't condone this. We are looking forward to the authorities bringing the culprits to justice."

Officials plan to file more complaints against the individuals involved with the foundation that runs the Tiger Temple, said Noochdumrong. These charges will also be filed against the chief monk of the temple, known as "the abbott," officials said. If the suspects are convicted of violating the Wildlife Conservation Act, they face a maximum penalty of four years in prison and/or a fine of $1,100, said Noochdumrong. The suspects were released on bail set at $2,250 per person. A prosecutor will decide whether to take the case to trial.

Jane Goodall feels sorry for Cincinnati Zoo director
June 5, 2016 The Jane Goodall Institute has released an email sent by the primatologist and conservationist to the director of the Cincinnati Zoo expressing empathy with him over the weekend shooting of a gorilla in an effort to protect a small child who entered the primate's habitat.

In the message to zoo director Thane Maynard dated Sunday, May 29, the day after the shooting, Goodall writes that she feels sorry for Maynard having to defend a shooting that he "may disapprove of." Goodall says it looked like the gorilla was putting an arm around the child and calls it "a devastating loss."

Goodall also asks about the reaction of the other gorillas and whether they were allowed to express grief. Goodall is known for her decades of studying wild chimpanzees in Tanzania.

No charges for toddler's mom in US gorilla storm
Tuesday 7th June, 2016 - The parents of a toddler who fell into a gorilla enclosure at a US zoo - leading the animal to be shot - will not face charges, a prosecutor said on Monday, closing the probe into an incident that transfixed the nation.

The boy's family faced a deluge of public criticism after keepers were forced to kill the rare 180-kilogramme animal to protect the three-year-old during the incident at the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. The mother - who was watching three children in addition to the toddler - did not act "in any way where she presented this child to some harm," Hamilton County prosecutor Joseph Deters told a news conference. She was "attentive by all witness accounts, and the three-year-old just scampered off," he added.

An accompanying statement from Deters' office said the mother turned away for a few seconds to attend to another of her children, and it was at this point that the boy was able to climb into the enclosure. "Any parent who is honest with himself or herself would have to understand how this could happen to even the most attentive parent," Deters said in the statement. He went on to defend the mother: "Had she been, for instance, in the bathroom smoking crack and let her kids run around in the zoo, that would be a different story."

WITCH-HUNT

The Cincinnati Police Department launched their investigation into the incident last Tuesday to decide whether pressing criminal charges against the boy's parents would be necessary. The boy fell 4.5 metres into the gorilla exhibit on May 28 after crawling through a barrier. Smartphone video images went viral worldwide, showing the massive primate dragging the child through a knee-deep moat as witnesses screamed. Hundreds of thousands of people rushed to sign online petitions condemning the child's mother for indirectly causing the death of the rare silverback gorilla - with a virulence that some denounced as a "witch-hunt." The prosecutor encouraged those quick to judge the family to reconsider. "The zoo lost a beautiful animal, and one that many people in this area have enjoyed watching for a long time. But it's still an animal. It does not equate human life," Deters said.

In a statement the family welcomed the prosecutor's decision, saying it was "what we expected" and extended thanks "to all of those who have been praying for us." "This is one more step in allowing us to put this tragic episode behind us and return to our normal family life," said the family, who last week urged well-wishers to make donations to the zoo. Zoo officials opted to shoot the endangered animal - a 17-year-old silverback named Harambe - rather than tranquilize it, a decision that's also garnered criticism. But zookeepers said they worried that hitting the gorilla with darts could agitate him before the sedative released, further endangering the child. According to the prosecutor the boy emerged from the enclosure "unscathed" despite rough handling by the gorilla.

I have seen children completely run wild regardless of how hard the Parents try to keep them safe and under control, too many Sugary Treats makes things worse, some children should not have Cotton Candy and Soda Pop, and at the Zoo ? a Kid cracked out on Sugar and brought up on Cartoon Lions and Magilla Gorilla might not really understand how dangerous Wild Animals are, I knew better at that age, than to want to be near Wild Animals.

Tue, Aug 23, 2016 - With online declarations such as Harambe lives, the Ohio zoo gorilla shot and killed after a three-year-old boy got into his enclosure has taken on life after death.

The late 17-year-old great ape has shown up in tongue-in-cheek petitions to rename the hometown Cincinnati Bengals, to add his face to Mount Rushmore or the Lincoln Memorial, and to put him on the US dollar bill. He has grown the angel wings and halo of a deity in social media memorials. He has even been mock-nominated for president. The Harambe phenomenon is fed by genuine sadness over his death, continued controversy over the circumstances that led to it and the penchant of many social media users for satire which sometimes turns offensive. There is a word we like to use in our discipline, in pop culture studies, and that is polysemic: has many meanings, said Jeremy Wallach, a professor of popular culture at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Harambe definitely is that, a sign that possesses many different interpretations.

Harambe remembrances began soberly, with a legitimate Justice for Harambe petition seeking to hold the boys mother responsible in his May 28 death. The Hamilton county prosecutor ruled there was no cause for charges. The zoo reopened its gorilla exhibit with a higher, reinforced barrier and urged support for gorilla conservation efforts. However, the zoos hopes of moving on have been countered by all the continued reminders. We are not amused by the memes, petitions and signs about Harambe, Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard said by e-mail. Our zoo family is still healing and the constant mention of Harambe makes moving forward more difficult for us. We are honoring Harambe by redoubling our gorilla conservation efforts and encouraging others to join us.

Esther Clinton, who also specializes in popular culture at Bowling Green, said the Kong-like proportions of the craze reflect lingering questions. There are a lot of people who really do feel bad about what happened to him, she said. Theres a sense of heres this poor guy, just in his cage imprisoned by humans, minding his own business; a kid climbs into his cage and he gets shot. It brings up all sorts of questions: about the zoo model, about the rights of non-human primates, about parenting. The Harambe phenomenon turned ugly in June, when images were posted on a Facebook page likening Adam Goodes, a retired Australian soccer player, to the ape. They were pulled down and the page apologized. Twitter got caught in a similar controversy after racial posts about Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones, who is black, included a Harambe comparison. The social media site recently announced two new settings aimed at curbing harassment.

Social media users like to satirize controversies. Never Forget #Harambe, read posts accompanying Harambes photo superimposed on sculptures, above cityscapes, among famous dead people such as Muhammad Ali or John F. Kennedy. Some Twitter users routinely add the hashtag #RIPHarambe even to posts that have nothing to do with him. He has surfaced in rewritten song lyrics, comedians acts, at sports events and in rap songs. On Change.org, a recent search turned up 253 references to Harambe. They include the early Justice for Harambe petition and the recent petition to rename the Cincinnati Bengals the Harambes, which has received more than 21,000 signatures. Other petitions want a Harambe emoji, a Harambe character in Pokemon Go, to clone Harambe, even to canonize him.

The move comes a day after the Cincinnati Zoo said it was "not amused" by enduring memes over the gorilla's death. Staff members fatally shot Harambe in May after a three-year-old boy climbed into his enclosure. The death was subject to controversy, prompting angry tweets and petitions.

Zoo 'not amused' by Harambe memes

Cincinnati Zoo director Thane Maynard said on Monday the staff was "still healing" from the incident and the outpour of online memes and satire was making it difficult to move on from Harambe's loss. The 17-year-old gorilla's death sparked international outrage and the boy's mother faced online scrutiny regarding her parenting skills. Prosecutors decided not to press charges against the mother.

The zoo reopened its Gorilla World exhibit in June. The exhibit included reinforced barrier designed to prevent further accidents. The memes took a racist turn in June when retired Australian football player Adam Goodes and Ghostbusters actress Leslie Jones were compared to an image of Harambe. Mr Maynard's Twitter account was also hacked over the weekend. The zoo's Twitter account was continuously flooded with references to Harambe before it was erased on Tuesday. For every Tweet they posted, no matter the subject, the zoo received dozens of replies referencing the gorilla.

The former chief executive at Turing Pharmaceuticals has developed a somewhat antagonistic relationship with the public since being branded the most hated man on the internet for hiking up the price of a life-saving drug used by people with compromised immune systems. This week, he attracted attention by refusing to stop making memes of Harambe, the gorilla who was shot when a child fell into his enclosure, after a plea from the Cincinnati Zoo for an end to jokes so staff could move on.

When his host pointed out that if they did, they would not be able to be used in the pharmaceutical industry, he continued: I dont think they should be.
