Here we go, Turnbull will attempt to use the vote to pretend he will be our saviour.

I suppose that aside, what do you think the implications will be for Australia? Not sure that there would be a significant economic impact directly and if there is it would be global but not sure if a British downturn would have too great an impact.

The other issue would be social implications and how that would play out globally. Interested to know people's thoughts on the issue. Is it all just a storm in a tea cup?

Its certainly not just a storm in a teacup.
Its the beginning of the collapse of the EU
Spain has an election in two weeks...dont be surprised if it turns into a referendum
to leave/stay in the EU also...and other countries will follow due to immigration problems...
Poorer nations like Poland it is rumoured will not be allowed entry into the UK now....
The real effect of the Brexit will take years, and many Brits abroard will be very concerned as to their
future...if and when they can return to the UK...industry and overseas trade will be effected.
Spain is said to be eyeing off Gibraltar, and thousands of jobs could be at stake, as Spain will seek
    to obtain sovereignty over Gibraltar...
Wall Street will come down tonite...the allords will crash on Monday..Hong Kong has already come down....
All ords at the moment...down 175 but down 215 on its high for the day...lot of money to change hands......

Both sides here have expressed concern, so TV's political bias aside.... I cant imagine it will be too bad in the short term, despite the pound dropping to mid 1980's value. Putin would be rubbing his hands and having a smile.

The brexit will mean bankruptcy for the UK, that is what I believe. Time will tell.
I don't understand the Brits, always whinging.
It might take some time, but this brexit could even make the EU stronger and better, because now they have to reform themselves.....
    Cheers

We can negotiate an FTA between us and the UK with the bureaucrats in London instead of the bureaucrats in Brussels.

The ABC was really pushing the plebiscite into the fore for Labor in recent days. Turnbull is ecstatic that the economy will now be on people's lips.

All that matters is what's being discussed.

Of course and reason why Turnbull will use the liberal economic fable with shameless haughtiness.

Not sure other countries are as bigoted as the grey haired English. Scotland and Ireland are now seeking independence from the UK and if successful will surely be a kick in the guts to those racist grey haired morons in England. The young voters are absolutely disgusted with the motives for moves out of the EU. I feel for the younger generation who have to live with this result, which restricts their freedom and ambition considerably. There will surely be a social change between generations if things get progressively worse.

Cameron the clown wanted to exploit the race card and attempted a profoundly selfish manouvre. Unfortunately tricky games like this, which is in the worst form, are the way conservatives roll.

Of course he will, just like Labor was blatantly lying about Mediscare so bad that even The Drum was ripping Shorten for it.

They're politicians. They use current events to their advantage, that's what they do.

The Brexit is possibly the worst thing that could happen to the EU, while having some long term effects on the UK. Britain will recover while transitioning as they had retained a considerable amount of the previous financial infrastructure and will only be effected by the instability of the money market over the uncertainty of unknown change.

Many do not know what will occur now as this is new ground. Many considerations will need to be accounted for, such as other nations wishing to exit due to the lack of reform and the stand over tactics of EU leading nations. Some nations continue to chafe under the rule EU but they are also reliant on the support such as Greece and Spain. While these nations have continued to have votes and political noises at exiting, neither are really in the position to do so.

This vote should have one undeniable point to be made which seems to have fallen on death ears for some time, reform is necessary.

Many are now talking about splitting of the UK. As Scotland has not long ago had their vote for independence which failed not only because the risk of economic failure but because the EU stated it would not be a certainty of joining in independence and that even so would take a decade to introduce the necessary programs needed to stand alone and join.

All in all the UK will recover in the long term and stand on its own two feet, the EU will be severely affected with the withdrawal of a major nation in their ranks, but all will depend on decent leadership from the nation and not the whimsical nature of parties such as Australia’s political scene.

The biggest lie in Australian political history is the liberal party being the party of economic management.
Shorten was no doubt telling a furphy about the liberals current current line on Medicare but there is enough there to suggest that it is on the liberal radar. Lee should be thanking Shorten for preempting such a likely outcome. Of course Turnbull is going to say he won't touch Medicare, but you can guarantee there will be some excuse for touching it latter on.

I don't know about the whinging Pom anymore. I think Aussies are close to taking the title. Cameron wanted to divide and conquer but left a messy division. Who knows how it will all pan out.

One cannot be more emphatic than Turnbull has been. The public outrage if they were to attempt privatization under his leadership would see the end of his political career. This isn't some "no cuts to Medicare, no cuts to..., no cuts to the ABC, no cuts to...", this was him basically telling the electorate to crucify him if he attempts it.

No politician can survive breaking a promise of that degree.

One thing has become very clear in the last couple days since the vote on the Brexit. Many people decided on the misinformation of immigration as to which way to vote.

As this is simply a major lie some people appear to have voter’s remorse due to finding out that immigration is entirely up to the UK government and not dictated by the EU. One would have thought this was known by the people, especially after the EU’s rapture last year with the mass influx of asylum seekers and the way different nations addressed the situation. Apparently not.

I do believe that this one issue in itself demonstrates that when politicians lie about these types of things they should be held accountable. Politicians who do lie in such fashion should be tossed from parliament and not be allowed to represent anybody.

We all see these lies and consider them to be exactly what they are, lies by a person who can do nothing but lie. However, apparently many people actually believe these things because they have distinct lack of information to decide for themselves. People who prey on those more gullible people should be condemned for their lies and the vote on the Brexit demonstrates exactly why…

This is an absolute disgrace...the very reason why no-one should ever trust any politician ever again....
To tell the people of the UK that the EU dictates immigration policy when the British Government does so is nothing short of a blatant abuse of power...one of the many reasons I do not tolerate these lying parasitical b@stards......

That is what makes them lies when they happen, whomever is the one doing it. Some of the things being bandied around as lies in the last 2 years are not really lies, because promises made sometimes are conditional and the ALP in the last election campaign lied about the state of the budget which meant anything the LNP promised was done on incorrect figures supplied by the ALP - which meant when the LNP got in office and uncovered the mess left by the ALP they had to approach things harder then expected. So much so I'd wonder if the ALP deliberately misled to create the circumstance for setting the LNP up as liars, if it not for the knowledge of how much a mess the ALP made when last in office, which goes to your other point...

Compared to recent ALP efforts when in power, the LNP most certainly is. They are more economical conservative and are not bound to the Unions, which you must accept the ALP exist to serve and you'd also accept growth in Union power is counter-productive to business growth. Union's have a role, but not at the expense of the nation. Those things alone provide a clear clue to the incapability of the ALP to manage projects and run the budget effectively, which is why they rely on being sensationalist and use the Union movement to run fear campaigns as their main platform for elections.

Yeah Yeah, your happier to point at the lies rather than have decency. We understand your stance.

It is just amazing that people are happier being misled and misinformed so they can point out how they were deceived rather than being informed... But hey, the media works on that very premise and look how well it works for them...

Stats and reports clearly show that labor are the most capable party to run the economy. The Libs have no idea or its their political ideology that gets in the road so they repeat something over and over again in the hope it will stick. You can only use it for so long before people find out the truth.

The Coalition definitely has no idea what to do. I suspect they'll sneak back in. They'll begin to dismantle Medicare. They'll continue to stuff up the NBN. They'll crack down on welfare to save a few bucks and allow the big end of town to fiddle their tax. At the end of their term they will be ready for the garbage can and Labor will be back and have to clean up the mess - again.

They are a visionless party and that's not overstating. Broad ranging investment interest is non existent. If you aren't a big corporation there is little to no benefit in the liberal party. They'll sit on their hands and watch our infrastructure crumble around them while giving huge breaks to big business.

They don't care about the NBN, Medicare, hospitals and schools, they're just the play ground for the serfs. They don't want a broad and shared economic base they want to create a nobility or make it more distinct it seems.

A vote for the liberals is a vote to be enslaved by nobility.

The problem is. None of them are cleaning up the incompetent messes they create, when they get voted back in. The reason why the countries debt continues to climb.

No one can keep borrowing $5 billion dollars every year, and giving it away in fee aid, when you don't have the money in the first place. Who is paying the interest on that $5 billion every year - that Australian tax payers.

It's not free aide, there are always economic strings attached.

Obviously the economic strings attached to free aid is not working. Otherwise Australia would not be $500 billion in debt.

As I suggested in an earlier post. Australians cannot continue to give free aid, when their citizens is is so much debt.

Yep. Disunity is a bad thing indeed for the European Union.

I agree Britain will recover. If its government obeys the referendum and actually exits the EU, Britain will get its fiscal sovereignity back - a great boon if its politicians can shake off Neoliberalism and embrace the market fluctuations in a floating pound.

Apparently last time they had fiscal sovereignity and a floating currency exchange rate they equated the market value of the pound with British power and prestige, so drops in the pound's exchange rate was a blow to national pride.

We have a similar thing going on here with the threat to Australia's credit rating. A credit downgrade would weaken the dollar, and a weaker dollar would make our exports cheaper and thus more attractive and competitive, yet the possibiity of a credit downgrade seems to be perceived as the end of the world and Australia's place in it.

Firstly our aide would only represent a minuscule percentage of the debt you suggest in relative terms and any aide would advantage our economy through trade agreements with that country. It sounds like a non reciprocating giveaway of our tax dollars but isn't.
