Would I be justified in killing a man who was holding my dog at knife-point ?

Imagine for a second you walked home and saw a man grabbing your dog by the neck about to kill him with a knife. If you had a gun, would you be morally/legally justified in killing him ? Is a dog's life that of a child's ?

Furthermore, would the law protect me if I did such a thing ? Humans are not the only sentient beings on the planet; dogs, apes, and other animals are aware of themselves beyond just a primal nature. They desire things, they care, the love, they protect. For this reason, I believe that that the law should view a man's dog as family, and not as a pet for which there should be less protection for. What say you ?

Well, if you didn't have a dog you would be spared from making that decision.

you cannot kill a person for threatening the life of your puppy.

    sorry.

    doing such would be murder.

nor can you kill a person for stealing running down the street with your tv.

now, you can DETAIN someone for animal cruelty, which is a crime, but you cannot kill them to prevent the crime.

didn't you claim to have some law enforcement knowledge?

how come you dont know this stuff?

That's actually a really interesting question. If all life is valuable and important then shouldn't we if we have the power to protect it against those that would take another's life? I can see it, you could kill a person threatening your dog.

Maybe he was thinking about a cop shooting a guy who was threatening the police dog that was chewing on his leg?

Well...I don't know if I would shoot him cause I might hit my dog. I'd probably just fire the weapon at the dirt around his feet.

And the dog is "property". So in many states its legal to shoot to protect your property. But the dog is a pet. And shouldn't be seen as a human being.

that's different. a police dog is different than a pet.

you can't kill a guy for threatening to harm your dog, cat, rabbit, gerbil, parrot, etc.

If you hit the dog you'll have a clear shot for the next round.

If the guy's in your house doing so, maybe. That's breaking and entry is it not? Well, then it's a matter of defending your home, regardless of whether or not the pet is being threatened, and many states allow for that type of killing.

Would I kill that person, probably, if my threat of death didn't deter them...They have already broken into my home and threatening my family with a knife...As far as the cops are concerned, the intruder was struggling with my German Shepherd, he was trespassing in my home and had a deadly weapon...When I told them to drop it with my gun out, they didn't and advanced, I defended...One less criminal in this world. Good riddance.

if you tell the police that you had to kill the guy cause he was threatening to cut your parrot's throat, they will laugh and then indict you for murder.

The guy broke into your home and is carrying a deadly weapon, the grounds for shooting and killing him is law in many states.

In some states, that they were in your house is enough to kill them. In others that they were brandishing a weapon would be enough to kill them. Just have to say you thought you were next. How come you don't know this stuff?

Yup, the person was a threat and killing them was the only way to stop them from being a threat. Most states allow for this kind of reasoning.

A guy with a knife gettng ready to cut you pets throat is a threat to you and your family. Who is more important? Your family or the crazy man with the knife?

even if Hitler was holding a gun to your puppy's head, you would not be allowed legally to kill Hitler.

    such would be murder.

only PERSONS can be defended with deadly force.

No matter the instructions from the judge, the jury is supposed to be all-powerful, and I would vote to acquit.

No it wouldn't. Just like if someone held a knife to your pet roosters neck or was going to step on your pet Caterpillar. If they killed your dog, then they'd face animal cruelty charges instead.
