I am surprised that Yemen is back in business.. I believe that Hunt Oil pulled out and production has been nil for 16 months.. Plus there has been repeated episodes of sabotage over the past decade.

Yemen Resumes Oil Output, Exports From Masila Fields

Yemen has resumed production and exports from its Masila oil fields for the first time since a civil war began more than 16 months ago, state news agency sabanew.net reported on Aug. 11.

The agency, which is run by the exiled government of President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, quoted oil minister Saif al-Sharif as saying Yemen also hoped to resume production from the Shabwa and Marib oil fields.

Sharif said Yemen hoped to resume exporting oil and natural gas from Ras Isa Port on the Red Sea, and Balahaf on the Gulf of Aden, but gave no details on timing or quantity.

An oil ministry official said last month that Yemen had sold 3 million barrels (MMbbl) of crude to commodities trader Glencore, drawing criticism from the main refinery struggling to provide fuel for local power stations.

Yemen is a small producer with proven oil reserves of about 3 Bbbl, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The impoverished country has been gripped by war pitting the Iran-allied Houthi group backed by troops loyal to ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh against the internationally recognized Hadi government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia.

Hadi's government has regained control of large parts of the country's south and east in the past year.

Most foreign oil companies left the country after the war began in March 2015. The EIA said nearly all output from Yemen's oil and natural gas fields had been shut since the war began.

Yemen pumped an average of about 127 Mbbl/d in 2014, but output declined to about 44 Mbbl/d in July 2015, the EIA said.

Yemen has two primary crude streams: the light and sweet Marib and the medium-gravity and more sulfur-rich Masila. According to the government, the southeast Masila Basin holds more than 80% of the country's reserves, an EIA report said.

Yemen conflict: Truce to start on Thursday, says UN envoy
Mon, 17 Oct 2016 - A 72-hour truce in conflict-ravaged Yemen is set to begin on Thursday, the UN special envoy announces.

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed said he had received assurances from all Yemeni parties for such a move. Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi's forces have been fighting Houthi rebels, who control the capital Sanaa. Mr Ahmed's announcement follows international alarm over the deaths of 140 people in a Saudi airstrike which hit a funeral gathering in Sanaa. Saudi officials say the airstrike in the capital earlier this month should have hit Houthi rebel leaders, but erroneous intelligence meant that the wrong site was targeted.

The US, Britain and the UN peace envoy to Yemen have all been urging warring parties in the country's civil war to declare an immediate ceasefire. In a statement, Mr Ahmed said he had received "assurances from all Yemeni parties of their recommitment to the Terms and Conditions of the Cessation of Hostilities of 10 April 2016". He said the measure would "re-enter into force at 23:59 Yemen time (20:59 GMT) on 19 October 2016, for an initial period of 72 hours, subject to renewal". Mr Ahmed said this "will spare the Yemeni people further bloodshed and will allow for the expanded delivery of humanitarian assistance".

Earlier, Yemeni Foreign Minister Abdel-Malek al-Mekhlafi said that President Hadi had agreed to the 72-hour truce. But the minister stressed that any ceasefire must also feature a promise by the rebels to end the siege of Taez, Yemen's third-city. The conflict in Yemen pits forces loyal to the internationally recognised government of President Hadi against the rebels. The coalition led by Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of backing the rebels and supports the president. The war has killed nearly 7,000 people in addition to wounding more than 35,000 and displacing at least three million since March last year, according to the UN.

WHO: Yemen's Suspected Cholera Cases Soar
October 28, 2016 — The number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen has ballooned to 1,410 within three weeks of the outbreak being declared, the World Health Organization said on Friday, as 18 months of war has destroyed most health facilities and clean water supplies.

Yemen's Health Ministry announced the outbreak on Oct. 6 in Sanaa city, and by Oct. 10 the WHO said there were 24 suspected cases. The following day, a WHO official in Yemen said there was "no spread of the disease". But on Friday, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told a Geneva news briefing that as of Thursday there were 1,410 suspected cholera cases in 10 out of Yemen's 23 governorates - mostly in Taiz, Aden, Lahj, Hodeida and Sanaa.

The conflict between a Saudi Arabia-led coalition and the Iran-aligned Houthi group which controls much of northern Yemen, including Sanaa, has destroyed much of Yemen's infrastructure, killed more than 10,000 people and displaced millions. Cholera is only one risk in Yemen's war but a rapid advance of the disease would add a new dimension to the humanitarian disaster which UNICEF says has left 7.4 million children in need of medical help and 370,000 at risk of severe acute malnutrition.

WHO said on Wednesday that only 47 of the suspected cases had tested positive for cholera and the outbreak had spread beyond the capital to nine other governorates. Children under 10 accounted for half of the cases with six deaths from cholera and 36 associated deaths from acute watery diarrhea, the WHO said in the Oct. 26 report. Although most suffers have no symptoms or mild symptoms that can be treated with oral rehydration solution, in more severe cases the disease can kill within hours if not treated with intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

Though the portions are smaller, she says the food rations prevent people from starving. “When you see mothers who have little to eat themselves, when you see their children slipping away, it just breaks your heart ,” said Luescher. "So, we appeal to the world to help us do our job on the ground. We appeal to the fighting sides that humanitarians can get access to more areas.” Luescher says the WFP was able to get to three hard-to-reach districts in Taiz governorate during last week’s 72-hour humanitarian pause in the fighting. She says the WFP will soon be able to access another 189,000 people in three other areas that have been off-limits. But, she adds, that does not solve the ongoing problem of hunger. The World Health Organization reports 1.5 million children in Yemen are acutely malnourished, about a quarter of them severely malnourished.

Cholera

The WHO warns cholera continues to spread throughout the country. Latest figures show 1,410 suspected cases of the fatal disease. In addition, the U.N. children’s fund says 7.4 million children lack health care. UNICEF spokesman Christophe Boulierac says nearly 10,000 children under five have died since the escalation of Yemen’s civil war at the end of March 2015. That is when the Saudi Arabian coalition began its air strikes against the Houthi rebels.

“As you know, there are many children who die not only from bombings and bullets, but also from the diseases that we have mentioned very frequently—diarrhea, pneumonia and so on. And, the fact that the deterioration of the health system is critical,” said Boulierac. U.N. aid agencies report Yemen’s health system has all but collapsed. They say about 600 health facilities have been damaged or destroyed and are no longer functioning, and that one-fifth of the country’s vaccination centers are closed.

Family of 11 killed by airstrikes in Yemen
Saturday 29th October, 2016 - Yemeni security officials say a family of 11 people was killed in a Saudi-led coalition airstrike in the war-torn western city of Taiz.

The officials say that the airstrike on Saturday targeted the house of a citizen named Abdullah Abdo in a southern district called al-Salw.

Taiz, the cultural centre of Yemen, has been torn between coalition-backed forces and Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, for the past year and a half. The district that came under attack is close to the front line, and officials said that it is often difficult hard to distinguish rebels from government forces.

The fighting between the two sides intensified in al-Salw in recent days and many families have fled their homes. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of security concerns.

U.N. seeks $2.1 billion to avert famine in Yemen
February 8, 2017 - The United Nations appealed on Wednesday for $2.1 billion to provide food and other life-saving assistance to 12 million people in Yemen who face the threat of famine after two years of war.

"The situation in Yemen is catastrophic and rapidly deteriorating," Jamie McGoldrick, U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, said in the appeal document. "Nearly 3.3 million people - including 2.1 million children - are acutely malnourished." Yemen has been divided by nearly two years of civil war that pits the Iran-allied Houthi group against a Sunni Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia. At least 10,000 people have been killed in the fighting, which has unleashed a humanitarian crisis in the desperately poor Arabian Peninsula country.

In all, nearly 19 million Yemenis - more than two-thirds of the population - need assistance and protection, the U.N. said. "Ongoing air strikes and fighting continue to inflict heavy casualties, damage public and private infrastructure, and impede delivery of humanitarian assistance," it said. "The Yemeni economy is being wilfully destroyed," it added, saying that ports, roads, bridges, factories and markets have been hit.

An estimated 63,000 Yemeni children died last year of preventable causes often linked to malnutrition, the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF) said last week. In Yemen, if bombs dont kill you, a slow and painful death by starvation is now an increasing threat, Jan Egeland, secretary-general of the Norwegian Refugee Council, said in a separate statement as the U.N. plan was launched. A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia entered Yemen's civil war in March 2015 to try to reinstate President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi after he was ousted from the capital Sanaa by the tribal Houthis, who are fighting in an alliance with troops loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

The United States has sent the Navy destroyer USS Cole to patrol off Yemen's coast to protect waterways from Houthi militia aligned with Iran, U.S. officials last week, amid rising tension between Washington and Tehran. Oxfam accused Britain and other powers backing the Saudi-led coalition of "political complicity" in the Yemen conflict. "The UK Government's calculated complicity risks accelerating Yemen toward a famine, putting millions of lives at risk and making a mockery of their global obligations to those in peril," Mark Goldring, chief executive of Oxfam GB, said in a statement.
