United States dairy farms are expected to produce a record 212 billion pounds of milk this year — and there aren’t nearly enough customers to buy it all. Much of this milk is being sent to cheese makers, who are making tons of feta, cheddar, and mozzarella and storing it for later, hoping for the best.

Even that’s not enough to get rid of all the excess milk, which is highly perishable. Some farmers can’t find any takers and are dumping their milk into nearby lagoons

I don't know for certain but remember hearing or reading how the USDA gives farmers subsidies for producing milk and cheese. And the government stores that cheese somewhere. Why don't they give that cheese to food banks and charities that feed the poor and homeless?

or lower the price of milk in the stores so people will buy the product...the dems keep saying the economy is booming but that isn't the truth..people are spending less on food than ever before...

They have done both. Millions of gallons have milk producers have been donated and current prices for dairy are at an all time low. This is not a result of the US economy or people not buying enough dairy in the US. (hint all you have to do is click the link in the OP and read. . .)

The milk subsidy is designed to drive up the price. The country is divided into regions and the farmers are guaranteed a minimum price by the government which sets the floor for milk prices. Nobody is allowed to go below that floor. That floor is higher than the price would be if the government was not involved. It is supposed to make it possible for people with small herds to compete with farms with huge herds.

then lower the price here and sell more of the product instead of dumping it to keep prices inflated..basic economics teaches you these in high school and college..or it did at one time..but with the liberals incharge who knows what they say nowadays..maybe they say drugs are better for you that healthy food i guess..

^ This. We're seeing a negative consequence of government interference in the market. Perhaps it's still better than the alternative of small producers being unable to compete, but there we go.

Some farmers made some bad business decisions, encouraged by government malinvestment. Tough.

Same thing happened here and the farmers feed the excess milk to their cows. Sort of (*)(*)(*)(*)ed up if you ask me, but to each their own.

I agree, I was just saying it was not the us economy crashing that cause htis

you would think supply and demand would take over, but as long as people still willing to pay more, then they will sell for more

People are reducing cholesterol intake (cheese and milk) and many do not want all the antibiotics and steroids used that ends up in the milk.

    Exactly.

Where I live, the price of cheese has nearly doubled recently. I now buy it only when it’s on sale. Screw these greedy @ssed farmers.

The dems support the cheap mexican labor for these farms. To top it off, they look the other way at the environmental disaster threat these farms pose from a heavy rain like flooding.

Very much preferable to the situation prior to these measures though. We have not had famines precisely because of that.
I prefer throwing out food than not having it.

I bet they go to church every Sunday.
Why don't they give that milk and food to the poor? After all, they claim god will take care of them. Obviously they don't really believe that, or they would give their excess to the hungry, wouldn't they?

It should at least be possible to donate that excess to starving, needy people somewhere. Something isn't right when that doesn't happen and this stuff goes to waste instead.

Quit subsidizing milk production. Let the market work.

It's already been pointed out that smaller producers would be driven out of business, i.e. farmers would suffer, and politicians love to pander to farmers (we do have a lot of them).

That might work in California, but not in the New England states, especially New York dairy areas, where the price of milk has not moved since the 1970's. A lot of farmers in my area have turned to raising Angus beef cattle. One farmer told me the best thing he ever did was to raising beef instead of milking cows.
