Pretty sure the Flying Tigers AVG flew the Curtis P-40 Warhawk. < http://acepilots.com/misc_tigers.html >

The A-10's nose art definitely comes from the Flying Tigers P-40.

When I was a FNG, the first combat mission I participated in was in June of 69, the amphibious assault known as Bold Pursuit.

I was a member of a NGF spot team and we were TAD to 1/26. I remember when Marine Corps CH-46's Sea Knight helicopters that would transfer 1/26 to the USS Iowa Jima and the first thing I noticed was the nose art that all Marine CH-46's always had painted on their nose, the evil eyes.
