In what will quite possibly be the greatest thing to come from this election, president elect Donald Trump has chosen retired USMC General James 'Mad Dog' Mattis as the future Secretary of Defense. What a momentous occasion for this country. We kept Hillary out of the White House and now one of the greatest warriors our country has ever known will be the Sec Def. As a Marine I know that veterans everywhere are celebrating this glorious news. Thoughts?

It was another solid choice. I'll wager there are more than a few nevertrumpers who are starting to realize the man is taking this very seriously. On multiple occasions, starting during the primaries, I pointed out that it looked more and more like Trump was going to pull it off. I will now say that it is looking more and more like he might actually do a good job. It wouldn't surprise me that if, when it is all said and done, those actually capable of evaluating his performance objectively might very well be saying he did a drastically better job than his predecessor.

Maybe the Dems will try to filibuster his nomination.... oh wait they got rid of the filibuster for cabinet positions last time they controlled the senate.

what teh hell is Trump thinking by naming a soldier's soldier to that job. He should have picked Miley Cyrus. If we are not careful now we just might start winning again. Can't let that happen or the UN will get pissed

Oh my goodness I almost forgot about that ! Old Harry Reid, what a gift. He really believed the republicans would never win again... senile I guess like Nancy. Oh well not a dam thing the Dems can do about it but whine. Sure puts a smile on my mug.

Excellent pick, someone that doesn't wear utopian colored glasses and sees the world the way it really is and recognize we have enemies that refuse diplomacy. :salute::flagus:

He's not even President yet and already did more than the last guy. I think we should just not even use the last guy's name anymore.

I have hope that this turns out good. I also hood that Gen. Mattis understands that Russia is bike vicious enemy of the US and the free worl and that he gets that across to thecTrumpeizda.

For Mattis to be confirmed, Congress would have to make an exception to a law it hasn't made an exception to in 65 years. Wonder who his second choice is?

Mattis is loved on the Hill and the idea that congress would refuse this is laughable at best. You think the riots the lobs are doing right now because their butthurt thier candidate lost are bad? The military would probably stage a coup if congress refused. I know Russians like you are probably pretty pissed about this, and you should be. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Pretty soon it's going to be zero days since the last exception.

Hah-ha .... "Russians like you" ..... get outta here.

The fact is no exception has been made since 1950 with MacArthur and that was supposed to be a one-time thing.

I don't know squat about Mattis; just trying to inject a little reality here.

    BTW, Putin says, "Boo!!!" :)

I wasn't aware of the simple majority for confirmation. Guess he may be a shoe-in then.

Exactly right. What was Mr. Trump thinking? A solid Marine officer for SecDef? How bold and innovative; Dems should take note...

Never thought I'd thank Harry Reid for anything. See? Never say never...

Based on his cabinet selections thus far, I think I can safely predict that Trump will do an outstanding job. This selection process is probably one of the top three most important things Mr. Trump will do between now and mid-April. So far, so good.

Yes. Russians like you. We established that years ago during the whole Ukraine fiasco.

Anyway. There is next to no chance Congress would refuse a waiver. It would be political suicide to vote against it.

Easily his best pick yet. Mattis is a true leader and hero. I didn't have the honor to serve under him, but have several close Marine friends who did and they can't say enough about him. Finally we can have a cabinet whose cornerstones are loving our country, not putting it down.

Thankfully tinpot dictators never surround themselves with mad dog generals. You surely dodged a bullet there, freedom lovers.

CNN was gagging about 'civilian leaders' and I'm sure George Washington was rolling his grave. ' Hey CNN Idiots, there's a reason we created the executive branch. The 'civilian leaders' were supposed to have the House of Reps.'

I wouldn't mind if he filled all of the military-oriented posts with generals.

We'll see how good this choice is.
    ,
Matthis' biggest job is going to be getting it through his boss' head that Putin and the Russians are not our friends, a notion that the Trumpster foolishly embrace (with help from the Russians).

Hopefully he's be the effective leader taht men like John McCain say he is.
