Why so obsessed with representation?

In contemporary gender studies/"SJW thought" there seems to be an - almost perverted - obsession with physical attributes where people are only defined by how they look and what their sexual preferences are. A popular discourse is that of media representation where the idea is that for example a black woman can only look up to other black women and if this category is not reoresented, black women are left without role models.

I never understood this idea and think the narrative that surrounds it is not only stupid but also inherently racist.

Do you consider this an important question? Why? Do you think eg a white boy can only have white role models? Have you ever felt "your kind" lacks representation?

This is not a rule. Anyone can look up to anyone as a role model. What is stopping them?

I am surprised the SJW's even allow for role models as we are all unique individuals not bound by stereotypes which are perpetuated by modeling other people's behaviors and values....or something like that.
