So, apparently today is New Years Day and last night was apparently New Years Eve. I use the operative keyword, "apparently" because what justifies either holiday? Couples get engaged on December 31st, people party, and get drunk as a skunk on December 31st, and I'm sure cops on December 31st fill their quotas with plenty of DUI's. But, what justifies having this universal year change be a holiday. How come the commercialism behind New Years, such frivolous commercialism (much like Pepsi and the Super Bowl) has risen to the point all the major networks freak out over the last hour, NYC freaks out, the time and resources is put into booking performers at Universal in Orlando, FL and Times Square, and people freeze their balls purple watching a glass ball move down a pole, and special graphics count down to midnight?

The last time I celebrated New Years was when 1999 turned to 2000, primarily because of the justification "Hey, the turn of the millennium happens once in a lifetime. Might as well celebrate it", as well as the hype about the Y2K bug. Unless I live, miraculously, to the year 2100, there won't be reason to celebrate New Years again. I'm sure I can find a party, or reason more justified to hit up ecstacy that isn't a hype holiday. That's all New Years is, a hype-holiday like St Patrick's Day and Groundhog Day. The people who are hungover, in jail cells, forget where they are, or who they are brought it on themselves.

New Years is not a big deal. It reminds us of our inevitable demise as we age, if we haven't done anything significant or risen in status, says to our face, "Hey, you worthless sack of mush. You just wasted a year, how do you feel?" I treat New Years Eve as just another day, hit the hay around 11, and look forward to the next week. You should do the same.

Btw New York, if we were to count down the seconds to midnight, why did we choose you? Shouldn't it be in Los Angeles so it makes more sense for the entire country?
