And yet another failure of Obama's foreign policy. While he was busy playing golf, taking Hawaiian vacations, trashing cops, getting free and fair public toilets and fomenting racial division, NK was busy perfection it's nukes and ICBM capabilities. What a mess Trump inherits.

"North Korea declared on Sunday it could test-launch an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) at any time from any location set by leader Kim Jong Un, saying a hostile U.S. policy was to blame for its arms development.

Kim said on Jan. 1 that his nuclear-capable country was close to test-launching an ICBM.

"The ICBM will be launched anytime and anywhere determined by the supreme headquarters of the DPRK," an unnamed Foreign Ministry spokesman was quoted as saying by the official KCNA news agency, using the acronym for the country's name.

The North is formally known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

U.S. Defence Secretary Ash Carter said on Sunday that North Korea's nuclear weapons capabilities and ballistic missile defence programs constituted a "serious threat" to the United States and that it was prepared to shoot down a North Korean missile launch or test"

Fun fact: prior to Obama, North Korea had no ballistic missiles.

You'd think electing a communist would have made North Korea like us a little better. Oh well.

North Korea also said Kim Jung Ill hit 11 holes in one in a single round of golf. Everything they claim is like reading a piece from the Onion.

    Waiting for the appropriate response:

"The United States declared today that North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system is inconsequential, and that any launch of such a missile will be shot out of the sky. Have a nice day." :peace:

Yeah, and that's nothing compared to what his cousin the golfer can post. You remember him? Menta Lee Ill? :worship:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIM-161_Standard_Missile_3

Following is the process a PAC-3 firing battery uses to engage a single tactical ballistic missile with two PAC-3 missiles:
1.A missile is detected by the AN/MPQ-65 radar. The radar reviews the speed, altitude, behavior, and radar cross section of the target. If this data lines up with the discrimination parameters set into the system, the missile is presented on the screen of the operator as a ballistic missile target.
2.In the AN/MSQ-104 Engagement Control Station, the TCO reviews the speed, altitude, and trajectory of the track and then authorizes engagement. Upon authorizing engagement, the TCO instructs his TCA to bring the system's launchers into "operate" mode from "standby" mode. The engagement will take place automatically at the moment the computer defines the parameters that ensure the highest probability of kill.
3.The system computer determines which of the battery's launchers have the highest probability of kill and selects them to fire. Two missiles are launched 4.2 seconds apart in a "ripple".
4.The AN/MPQ-65 radar continues tracking the target and uploads intercept information to the PAC-3 missiles which are now outbound to intercept.
5.Upon reaching its terminal homing phase, the Ka band active radar seeker in the nose of the PAC-3 missile acquires the inbound ballistic missile. This radar selects the radar return most likely to be the warhead of the incoming missile and directs the interceptor towards it.
6.The ACMs (attitude control motors) of the PAC-3 missile fire to precisely align the missile on the interception trajectory.
7.The interceptor flies straight through the warhead of the inbound ballistic missile, detonating it and destroying the missile.
8.The second missile locates any debris which may be a warhead and attacks in a similar manner

Obama has had eight years to do something a out NK and all he has done has let them test, develop and modernize both nukes and ICBM technology.

Here's some not so fun facts and inconvenient dates for Obama defenders.

"North Korea has developed a new long-range mobile intercontinental ballistic missile that the Pentagon says moves the country’s leader Kim Jong Un closer to the goal of building missiles capable of striking the U.S. mainland with nuclear warheads.

The new missile is called the KN-14 by the Pentagon and is a longer-range variant of the KN-08 road-mobile ICBM first made public in 2012.
    http://freebeacon.com/national-security/pentagon-confirms-new-north-korean-icbm/
Both the KN-08 and the new KN-14 have not been flight tested. But defense officials familiar with reports on the weapons said both systems have been tested in all other aspects of their development.

“It’s a KN-08 on steroids,” said one official of the new KN-14.

No details about the KN-14’s capabilities, such as its range, warhead carrying capacity, or the number of missiles were disclosed by the officials, who said reports of the missile were circulated by U.S. intelligence agencies within the past two weeks.

The new KN-14 missile was first displayed during an Oct. 10, 2015 military parade in Pyongyang. Its main external difference from the KN-08 is a shorter length and blunt nose cone."

Not real worked about what Kim says but those in the know here seem legitimately concerned.

Interesting but I wonder if our entire west coast from Alaska to California is protected by these and just how impenetrable that shield would be. I remember when Reagan proposed such a shield and was viciously attacked and mocked by the left that called his idea "Star Wars". Reagan was truly a visionary ahead of his time.

He can’t hit the cont. U.S. it just to far. It order to hit Alaska or Canada , he would have to lunch in directly north and come in over the pole. The problem which situation is that if does that, he shots it over Eastern Chinese and Russian airspace. He isn’t stupid.
If he uses a nuclear weapon, he it is going to be against Soul and US military installations on the peninsula. At which point all hell is going to coming down on Pyongyang.

Fact. But also fact is that all presidents since Truman ignored the historic antagonism of North Korea, which slowly built up into this threat in Asia. Through Proxy North Korea, China can bolster a nuclear threat to the US while plausibly denying that they have anything to do with it. Another way to put it, is that the neo-cons focused on the wrong demon. It was the North Koreans who were a far greater threat than Iran.

With the testing of these missiles and with their propaganda video on targeting NY, we cannot take it as a false bluff. Or to quote Dick Cheney "A 1% chance, is a chance too great." I'd send a communication to North Korea, to the effect: Cease and desist your nuclear capabilities, or face a declaration of war from the United States.

Why would North Korea wish to start a nuclear war with the US?

Unless we send them communiques saying we are going to declare war on them

And didn't they send up an ICBM just last year, which didn't even get into the Sea of Japan?

My feeling is that Un's missiles get improved every time he's down to his last warehouse of Hennessy. The NE-1 (NE meaning NonExisting) warhead is known as one of the more expensive in the Arsenal of Fictional Weaponry.

This is about ICBMs, not simply nukes.

Well, they had no ballistic missiles that could reach the US. Now according to Un, they will soon.

What are you worried about? Trump tweeted "It won't happen!" So ......... problem solved.

    - - - Updated - - -

So what, concretely, should have been done in the last 8 years to stop North Korea from developing this technology? Serious question.

Actually, it was Clinton who gave North Korea not one, but two plutonium producing reactors.

And what proactive response did Obama formulate to prevent further development of North Korean nuclear weapon capabilities?

Fun fact: Yes they did. North Korea began developing its ballistic missile capabilities during the Clinton Administration.

The "shield" is like a sieve.

For those who have so quickly, forgotten the Gulf War, the Patriot was only marginally successful.

They wouldn't, but they could engage in nuclear black-mail. Worse than that, they could transfer a nuclear weapon to hostile groups.

Hard for me to to say, I'm not in that loop. What I can say is Obama did nothing as NK tested and developed nukes and ICBM technology.
