In 1967, at the height of the Vietnam war, William Francis Pepper, a human rights lawyer, published an article in Rampart's Magazine called The Children of Vietnam that vividly depicted the effects of US napalm on innocent children. This photo essay would inspire MLK to oppose the war in Vietnam and campaign for its end. It would also set in motion of chain of events that would result in MLK's tragic assassination a year later.

To make a long story short: King was killed because his opposition to the Vietnam war represented an existential threat to the power elites who were profiting of it and benefiting from it. At least, that is what many of MLK's closest friends and family believe, to include Mr. Pepper, who wrote a lengthy book in an attempt to prove James Earl Ray's innocence and, by extension, a conspiracy involving various government agencies, to include rogue elements within the CIA and FBI.

Of course, this is considered by many to be nothing more than a harebrained "conspiracy theory". Yet this "theory" of a "conspiracy" is supported by a great deal of evidence. In fact, there was enough evidence in support of this theory to convince a jury that such a conspiracy did in fact exist.

Pepper lays out his case in the following CSPAN interview. I advise you to watch and listen and to keep an open mind. Because the assassination of MLK was one of the most consequential events of the 20th century. And the truth about it should be known.
