Starting February I'll be in the academy. So I'm asking for general advice on what to do, what not to do, what to expect, what not to expect, etc. I'm also asking for YouTube channels that might help me. I'm already subscribed to Free Field training and officer401 but I was wondering if there's and more. Thanks.

Your avatar is a gun and a Bible and you're going into law enforcement? Great.

Same sort of advice you'd give someone going into the military really.

Don't have an ego, have an attitude ready to learn, adapt and overcome quickly, and keep your morale high.

On a side note - remember who your allies are. EMS & Fire - us in the 911 triangle are your brothers/sisters too. Work with us and communicate with us. I've met plenty of cops who think they're too good to talk to us. Don't be that guy.

    Good luck!

Iunno. Have fun. Don't shoot people unless you have to. Don't try to be cooler than firemen. Write your name on your lunch. And tell us if those quota things are real.

Study CHL related laws. (Use of force, where CHL carry is and isn't legal, castle doctrine, etc......) Study laws in general. It's hard to enforce something you don't know.

It's kind of late now, but hopefully you show up in good shape.

Get some range time in with your service weapon so that you are comfortable with it in the academy.

Study maps so that you know the city and how to best get around. A lot of crime happens on small streets and you need to know how to get there.

Have your affairs in order. (Will, power of attorney if you are incapacitated, organ donor?, etc....) It can be a dangerous job, so you might as well prepare for the worst.

I've met a couple of cops who complained about AA, and I think they're right. It's total BS. But recognize before you go in that you're going into a government position, and everything is political. So when someone gets a promotion based on something other than their merit, recognize that you chose that.

One of my brothers is a cop, I'm just ex-Army.

My advice to you is to keep all political comments under an assumed name (hopefully you are not an actual McCabee). Try not to say, or certainly write anything political/racial/religious in nature that others can figure out came from you. There will be troublemakers who will cause you pain in the police. I've learned to almost totally turn off the volume when talking about such things in public and on social media.

    Good luck.

Will do. Though I think its safe to say that at least for my state quotas don't exist.

I don't think they exist for speeding tickets, but I think some cities might have parking ticket quotas lol

    Another big thing.

A friend of mine's kid (22 years old) became a police officer. He is a good friend of my older boys. He got into an argument with his wife and it got loud enough for someone to call in the cops. As you may know, somebody almost always gets hauled off to end any future conflicts that night. My friend's son admitted to dragging his wife off of the bed during an argument and they got him for a domestic abuse charge. He immediately lost his job.

Live your life like you do your job. Keep your temper. I didn't start carrying a gun until I was 42. The one thing it has taught me is that it raises the stakes should I lose my temper. As you get older and gain responsibility (wife and kids) this becomes more clear. Learn from the mistakes of others.

Not sure what advice to give, but I would find out if I could carry a Desert Eagle as my service weapon and a katana as a back up weapon. How cool would that be?

Heavy and impractical but who cares when you look cool, am I right? Who cares that I've never shot a desert eagle in my life and I'm a bit rusty on my swordsmanship? The fact that I look cool will deter ALL criminals. ;)

Watch your back sir, and thank you for your service. See what your up against . The left prefer the Koran and a suicide vest.

Be aware that you are going to be lower than low when you are first assigned an experienced partner and above all else, have your partner's back at all times. Good luck and good for you!!

PAY ATTENTION and Listen to instructors. You're becoming a law officer at a critical time, keep your head on a swivel and good luck. Regardless of what you hear or read there are millions of Americans that respect your choice. I imagine your folks are proud.

Part of the reason why I'm taking this path. A bit sick and tired of these BLM/SJW riots and I want to prevent that from coming here as best as possible.

They are. However I'm not in yet. I still have to go through the academy but I get what you're saying.

Maybe it's a federal register and he worships the state. After all, he'll be defending it without question.

wanting to be a cop for highly partisan/political reasons is totally inappropriate.

if they get any sense that you have any sort of agenda, they will kick you out.
