Self taught is just code for "crackpot".

Self taught means not willing to make the effort to do it right.

Self taught means too lazy to really learn.

This includes almost all subjects in academia but it applies to ministers as well. If anyone needs the proper context and background in order to understand what they read, it is ministers.

The age of self-taught internet experts is killing us.... literally.

Trump and his attack on the free press and 1st Amendment, are some of the fruits of this. Now you can believe whatever you want and there is some blogger or website to tell you, you're right.

And science! Oh my gosh. So many people who know so little but talk so much! Reading opinions about subjects of science can make a real scientist want to cry.

So explain why you feel why it's so important that ministers should have proper context nad background in order to understand what they read. This sounds interesting.

If one is truly called to the ministry that is one thing and in that case how you acquire your knowledge matters not. On the other hand too many have now fallen into the hucksterish prosperity theology trap. The purpose of the ministry is to minister to the flock God has given you. It is not jolly people along the path to hell while you pick their pockets.

Ohhhhh you're wrong about that. Just because someone is called to minister doesn't mean they have to be over a corporate church. They can be a junior minister. Speaking the word is one thing. Being the big boss is quite another. No different from an NFL coach who is great at coaching but then wants to be the genral manager. He takes on additional duties that he isn't suited for and then he makes several mistakes that affect his coaching. And he destroys the gift he was really meant to do. All of these ministers weren't meant to be OVER the church but to spread the gospel. And also, even if they are called to minister, they have to put in the time to really know the word and what they are talking about. Whether they go to school, or dealve into the books themselves. But they can't just without effort. Proper effort, just say because they are called to minister that t hey get a free pass. Even Michael Jordan had to work his tail off as a kid. He wasn't good enough to make the hs team. He went back and worked hard. It doesn't happen naturally. Having the ability to talk well and energtize folks doesn't mean they are minister material. Because they may not know what they are getting folks excited about. And that is dangerous.

Because they'll start thinking that "Lucifer" refers to the devil instead of Venus. And that's just one example.

LOL! The first item on the list is:
"1. Don’t wallow in insecurity because of a lack of formal training"

And sure, don't feel insecure because there are all sorts of theories, viewpoints, understandings, and conclusions out there on what the bible is saying. So why worry about adding one more? It's all a matter of opinions about unproven myth anyway. Add your own with pride!

It is up to the congregation to decide if the minister serves their needs. There is a string of Baptist churches in my area that all derive from a single Baptist Church that has divided so many times over ministers and church politics, it is almost comical. The running joke is every time someone gets upset, our city gets a new baptist church.

Paul had the call but was never ordained. Everyone of these guys running the mega churches with five thousand members has a degree and about the only members they know are the top donors and half them don't know scripture as well as many parishioners I know. If you are in the ministry to get rich you are there for the wrong reason.

I agree about not getting into it to get rich. Which is what the mega churches preach. These guys are crooked to the core. And they all don't have degrees. Some are self taught. Meaning no peer reviews. Meaning the go unchecked. And I bet Paul delve into the word so deep and lived that life!! Something current ministers don't do. Which is a huge difference.

Oh they are checked alright. God takes a very dim view of people who put lies in his mouth and cause people to stumble.
