I'd like to know why people think diversity is a good thing. From my perspective bringing poor, uneducated, unskilled people who don't speak our language into our country does not necessarily benefit us, all it does is allow us to say we're diverse while the people who come here try to turn our country into what they escaped from. If they think our country is so great then why don't they try to do what we do in their own country instead of almost demanding that we turn our country into theirs?

What benefit is there to being diverse other than an emotional feeling? Especially when, for the most part, we're not bringing in the best and brightest other countries have to offer. How do we benefit from a Middle Easterner or anyone else living down the street who has no money, no language skills, no education and little prospect of finding a decent job?

Yeah, I know, we're a country of immigrants. But those days are gone, our culture and language have long been settled. When our own military goes overseas they're told to respect foreign cultures, yet we allow our own culture to be watered down if not outright ignored and insulted, plus a person is considered to be bigoted if s/he expects foreigners to act and speak like Americans. They do come here to become Americans, right?

So why is diversity a good thing, especially when said diversity is only lowering the standards of America and not raising them?

It makes perfect sense if you hate the USA, hate American values, hate American traditions and overall hate Americans.

Why has the federal government continued to subsized M.I.T. to deny Americans enrollment to instead teach Iranians how to build intercontinental ballistic missiles, nuclear bombs, advanced anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, and the means to hack American computer systems? Because the zippy pinheaded academia left outright hates the USA - and has been teaching 2 generations of young Americans their hatred of this country.

Condemning societal cohesion to replace it with diversity is a declaration of self-hatred and self-punishment for it.

Who is most contrary to American values? Who is THE most bigoted, THE most mysogynistic, THE most homophobic, THE most anti-secular government and laws, THE most xenophobic and THE most anti human and civil rights people and men on earth? ME Muslim men. THEREFORE the USA-hating left furiously demands we bring in millions of such fellow anti-Americans as part for their war on the USA and Americans.

It, of course, is not a good thing.

Diverse communities have less social cohesion. People trust each other less. And this loss of trust is not only between cultures but also within cultures.

Sweden's socialism was successful because the citizens were all Swedes. Now that Sweden is committed to multiculturalism, the country is failing.

In a simple and short response, one would say it is to allow expansion of American culture, since responsible Americans do not exclude themselves to one language or religion.

We may not be bringing in the "best and brightest" but very well could be making the "best and brightest."

America never stopped being a country of immigrants. Immigrants in 2017 are as welcome as immigrants were in 1910. Imagine if we exercised the same hostility then toward immigrants that we are now. The European ancestors that immigrated here in that time period would have had complication after complication in immigrating here. America is not a country club, as much as nationalists would like to make it out to be. Think about brawurst from Germany or sushi from Japan. Cutting diversity off, we never would have those foods, as unhealthy as the former may be. Hell, even pretzels originated in Europe.

America was founded by immigrants, her society has been built upon by immigrants, and that's how it will always be. Diversity is nothing but good news.

BS. We are bringing an alien culture, namely Muslim that has been enemy of western society since it was born. They have been our enemies for centuries. What makes you think this is somehow over?

Your question would ultimately make this a religious debate, since throughout history, religions have butted heads with one another and their societies, and has led to war. Besides, how could it not be argued that we weren't bringing in an alien culture in the early 1900's with letting people from Ireland, England, Germany, Poland, and France in?

Times change. What was good a hundred years ago need not be good now.

We had laws to protect the US from too much diversity by restricting immigration based on country of origin. Those laws were repealed and the resulting immigration has strained the US and those strains are reflected in the last election.

How can diversity be good when the resultant diversity has caused a serious discussion of California seceding from the Union? Diversity is leading to a polarization and break-up of the nation. That is not good news.

You have been brain-washed into thinking diversity a good thing because it serves the interests of the 1%. Stop being a tool of the globalists.

Just because California is standing up for the rights of immigrants doesn't justify it seceding from the union. Maybe its other areas of the country that are having larger issues they are trying to project onto California, or won't admit they won't stand up to Trump like California has.

Trump could have based immigration restrictions on country of origin, over basing countries off of religion. But he didn't. And on a personal level, I rather be a globalist than a nationalist.

Because they were all Christians, all White, and shared a common Western culture for a thousand years.

What makes you think America should be a exclusively Christian, white, English-speaking country? What is the justification for having such a society?

It basically boils down to morality. America is considered the best country in the world, and even if not all folks agree with that we can almost all unanimously agree that America is a better place to live than where many of these immigrants are coming from. If it wasn't then they obviously wouldn't be trying to come here.

Now, America is a nation that sucks up a lot of resources. I read a few years ago that if everybody on Earth lived the way America does then we'd need like 7 planets to support the population. So basically we use up a lot of resources because our standard of living is better than a lot of other places.

So from a pure global perspective we are already taking way more than our fair share of the pie. But it's not like we are THAT greedy, you can come live here too if you want. Now imagine if we sealed the borders completely and STILL used up our very unfair share of world resources and just sat over here fat and happy and didn't let anybody come over here. That would be a problem. We could do that sure but if you think a lot of folks hate us now then go ahead and do that and see how the world feels.

But there does come a point where we can't take everybody. There does have to be a limit. I know everybody wishes they could live like Americans but it's simply not feasible, literally, we'd need 7 planets, we only have one. I mean I know it sounds harsh and rude or whatever but I'm sorry, everybody can't live here we don't have room for everybody and we shouldn't drain our treasury and spend our tax dollars to give people money when they come here just because their own country sucks.

We simply cannot afford to keep doing this forever.

Maybe CA seceding is not justified, but it is happening, and it is happening because of diversity.

The question is "why is diversity a good thing." Can you justify your preference in terms of value to the nation? (Or, I guess, being a globalist, you have no interest in the value to the nation.)

Shared moral values, shared cultural norms, and a shared language. These things help to create communities of people who trust and care about each other.

It would be a happier place to live. (Or, what Belch just said.)

I think the goal of a community or nation is to maximize the happiness of the citizens.

Yet, we don't have existence of a God to say "In God We Trust."

Why not make America simply a agnostic country, since we have evidence Jesus existed, but no scientific or archeological explanation for god. Makes a lot more sense.

Diversity means you all actually have to be different. Multi-culturalism will kill diversity in the long haul.

The benefits that come with cultures intertwining with each other, like music for example. People tend to forget the biggest names in classical music were of German origin. Then you have Mariachi music, brought by Spanish culture. Then you have oriental music, which came from immigrants coming from Asia. Then you have the different types of cuisine available. Yes, Spanish is becoming as ordinary as English but as you alluded to in your initial response. Times change.

The commonality was religion. So was western thought and culture. That linked us. Islam does not and never will.

The argument for more immigration is an economic one, the US has a long history of benefiting from migrant workers. The idea of getting an economic benefit out of immigration is a foreign concept to many, the people it is not a foreign concept to are economists. The general consensus from people who are well versed in economics agree that more immigration is to our benefit

I detest Mariachi music (which is Mexican, not Spanish), but there is no arguing about taste.

Western music has a common basis all over the West based on a twelve tone scale. Germany has had great composers, but so have Italy, France and England (and, yes, Spain). They all use the same scales and all use the same instruments. Their composers (and artists and architects) have been listening and influencing each other for centuries to create a common Western culture.

Times change, and sometimes changes are for the worse. Bilingual countries are notoriously fractious.

It presents more opportunities. Especially on a economic basis.

Think about it, would Chinese takeout remotely exist had we not allowed the Chinese to immigrate here?

Like what exactly? Entertainment of any type can be turned off. True accomplishment not so much.
