It looks like California is finally about to destroy their own healthcare system by covering the entire state's population on the tax payer's dime. Here we have a state that wants to legalize every drug imaginable yet they want people to remain healthy, and if they get sick, well, the tax payers will pick up the tab.

Can you imagine the influx of sick people, deadbeats and, of course, illegals, who will fill every inch of California's open space so they can get their freebies at the cost of...let's say it again ...the tax payers.

My advice to the other 49 states would be to let California do this, let it bake for 5 or 10 years and then see what the ultimate outcome is. My guess is that we would all witness a horrific and costly failure by California who, by that time, might need a friendly democrat president and congress to bail them out with...one more time...tax payer money.

    Sounds like a good idea.

It will probably save money on less uninsured ER visits.

Because we all know there is absolutely no waste in government. LOL

California is close to 1/2 trillion in debt. When any country goes to a one payer system, it becomes their biggest budget item.

I'm all for this. States are policy laboratories, so if California thinks they can come up with an affordable health care plan to cover everyone, I want to see them try. Just a cautionary note that Vermont was going to do the same thing and balked when they ran the numbers. So it's a daunting issue, particularly since the practical effect of this is that they will end up covering everyone in Mexico.

But they don't have to pay for any military forces.

Still will become the biggest budget item.

What are the odds the bill exempts elected officials who will keep their current cadillac coverage? I can't see Gov, Moonbeam waiting two weeks to get an appointment like the regular folks.

And the unions, don't forget the unions. I can see policemen, firefighters and teachers willingly waiting and waiting for an appointment for no other reason than it feels good. And, of course, no one will complain about the higher taxes.

Speaking of that if California is able to secede from the US they'll have to form a real military. It'd be bad if Kim Jong Un decided to invade Sacramento and Trump says not my problem.

Costs derail Vermont’s dream of a single-payer health plan

They can try it in California, but it will end up just like it did in Vermont.....on the scrap heap of bad ideas.

They tried it in Colorado too, in a referendum for "ColoradoCare". It was soundly defeated by a huge margin (20% for vs 80% against). No mainstream Democrat, including the Governor and Sen. Bennet, wanted single-payer because they knew how much it would cost the state. Even the left leaning Denver Post came out against single payer.

I live in a place with nationalised free healthcare. It works beautifully, always has. And yes, the taxpayer funds it.

It works out well, because precious types still opt to pay for overpriced private care - not because it's better quality (it isn't in this country .. it's inferior to public healthcare), but because they think it will impress their friends - or because they demand a private hospital room. Not many people are so precious that they can't abide sharing a 4 bed ward, so it's a smallish industry, but it's there nonetheless. No one is forced to accept public healthcare.

Only in California! Subsidizing lawn mowers, kitchen help and other low skilled illegals with free health care is a recipe for disaster.

Yeah, that's what they told us about Obamacare. Turns out that didn't happen. ER visits and costs went UP under Obamacare. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2015/05/04/emergency-room-visits-rise-under-affordable-care-act/26625571/

There are no free unicorns. Its not that the people on the left are ignorant. Its just that so much of what they know is wrong.

Hey California. Do IT. JUST DO IT.

    Look at me. DO IT.

Your economy will collapse into the Pacific and you will be a horrible example for anybody else contemplating such foolishness.

    - - - Updated - - -

Yes, look at the history of Tenncare in Tennesee. Also, Oregon tried a type of this some years ago.

Yeah, but we will have to build a bigger wall when desperate Californians try to escape to the real America from their new Venezuelan style paradise.

They can't even keep up maintenance on a dam, what makes them think they can afford this?

Good for them. They'll lead the way I am sure. You can't wait on Trumptoids to come up with a plan. It's been over 8 years and they're still beating their heads against the wall.

Hmm, maintenance on a dam? Wasn't there an infrastructure bill in 2011 that Obama introduced, that might have fixed that back then which Republicans voted down?

Venezuela? You mean the country the U.S. placed sanctions on ever since we were unable to overthrow their government, just like we have done to the rest of the South American and Central American countries; https://www.geopoliticalmonitor.com/us-interventions-in-latin-american-021/?
