Canadians must pass a background check, provide third party character references, not have been treated for a mental illness within the last five years, and pass a firearms safety course in order to get a license to buy a gun. Firearms in the restricted category must be registered. But such gun restrictions have certainly not been the slippery slope to a ban on all guns. Canada shows that it's possible to have common sense restrictions on firearms while still allowing a lot of people to own guns. So why are American gun owners so afraid of common sense gun control? Are they pumped full of paranoia by the gun lobby? I don't think the NRA wants to find a solution that everyone or most Americans can be happy with. They make way too much money off of gun politics They want to keep it that way.
"So why are American gun owners so afraid of common sense gun control?" We haven't seen any. We have seen plenty of unconstitutional, knee-jerk, self-contradictory, unenforceable, unenforced and ineffective attempts at gun control. How come it's never "criminal control"?
The nation of Canada has already utilized its registration process for the purpose of prohibiting firearms ownership. http://www.torontosun.com/2014/05/0...feds-over-controversial-gun-reclassifications
LOL cause in their world it's not the criminal controlling the gun....it's the gun making the criminal do bad things.
because those who push gun control do it to punish conservatives: crime control has nothing to do with it No movement in America is more dishonest about its goals and motivations than the Gun Restriction movement - - - Updated - - - Id' love to see anyone arrested for that to fight back. same in california for having a banned magazine"
All we have to do is to look to the dem controlled states to shoot down your idea OP. In NJ if you go out of your house with your gun you go to jail. It is the long term goal of the dems to confiscate guns. you keep Canada as you like, we keep the US as we like.
If we had these kinds of common sense laws on the national level we would save a lot of lives AND you could still have your guns
Gun control is fuelled by the same stuff as drug prohibition: moral panic and knee jerk reactions by scheming politicians who see an opportunity to exploit at the expense of liberty.
No ⅝ of a Gun is not a Gun, and after your sweeping gun bans and further Restrictions on Concealed Carry, most people would only be able to have Guns inside the home and no where else. And after all of your Bans, no lives would be saved, as in every other Country where such drastic Draconian measures have been taken.
Gun control is a scam even in Canada. Canada dropped its long gun registry in 2012 because it did not help reduce crime, solve crime, or make the job of the police easier or safer. When pressed by parliament, the RCMP could not state one case in which the long gun registry helped to solve a crime. Every reason for the registry cited by the gun banners turned out to be a lie. But the gun banners still demand a registry. Quebec refused to destroy its registry - despite no value whatsoever in reducing crime. After the appeals process was exhausted Quebec was forced to destroy the registry. And then Quebec decided to set up its own provincial registry. Why? Public Security Minister Pierre Moreau said "The goal of the registry is to identify who owns firearms, and where the weapons are." So its not about public safety or crime reduction at all. There is only one reason the registry exists - so that one day the govt can confiscate firearms. So your "common sense" restrictions are a farce.
Nah. Registration helps law enforcement....but it needs to be handguns - - - Updated - - - Many lives will be saved by using these reasonable gun control measures as demonstrated by the fact that all first world nations that have them have MUCH less violent crime than we do.
Registration does not help the investigation of crimes, it may serve to identify origin and last legal owner, but most guns used in Crime are stolen and as such, registration is useless in solving actual Crimes.
As have mine many times. Are you saying law enforcement has NEVER used registration to apprehend criminals? Really?
The FBI has proven that Statement, if a gun is stolen and resold many times, and the paper trail shows that gun was stolen from a gun store, and found at a Crime scene, a Murder, wiped clean of evidence, and if the Murderer is unknown as in most cases, how does Registration help solve a Crime ? Answer: it cannot.
So gun registration has NEVER helped law enforcement anywhere in the world? This is your stance? Really?
Examples of how gun registration in Canada has helped police seize all the guns which certain dangerous individuals owned: "After an individual was observed driving directly into some parked vehicles, he was taken into an ambulance to be checked out. He subsequently pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the attendants and threatened to kill them if they touched him. He then exited the ambulance and fled on foot. The local police soon apprehended him and found that he was in possession of a Glock pistol and loaded spare magazines. Canadian Firearms Registration online (CFRO) checks indicated that he was a licensed owner of 31 registered firearms. NWEST was asked to assist by preparing the public safety warrant, laying charges and seizing 33 firearms (two of which were not registered), along with thousands of rounds of ammunition..... "Information from a concerned citizen indicated a web page where young males were posing with numerous firearms (handguns and long guns) while at the same time drinking and partying. From comments made on the site it was determined the residence was in Gander, NL. Local law enforcement was able to identify one of the males noted in the web page as well as his residence. The firearm Registry was able to confirm that a male living at that residence, believed to be the father, had a collection of restricted, prohibited and non-restricted firearms, twenty in all. A check of these firearms provided by the registry confirmed they were the same type noted in the photos on the WebPages. RCMP officers were able to obtain and successfully execute a Public Safety Search Warrant and seize all 19 firearms.... "Provide support to RCMP Detachment in Alberta after a suspect was stopped with 4 long guns in his vehicle. The suspect was evasive when questioned about the firearms leading investigators to believe that they had been stolen. NWEST conducted CFRO checks on the recovered firearms and determined that all 4 were registered to a local resident other than the person that was in possession of them. The registered owner, who was working out of town, was contacted by police and stated that as far as he was aware all of his firearms were safely stored at his residence. Police attended ownersÂ’ residence and discovered evidence confirming that his residence had been broken into and that all 16 of his long guns had been stolen. Investigational follow up subsequently resulted in the recovery of the remaining 12 long guns from the suspect.... "I know of examples where the police removed guns from a local man who was depressed and another where the legislation prevented a psychotic woman with no past history of mental illness or criminal activity from obtaining guns. Both of these scenarios could easily have been tragedies involving several people, primarily their family members, had there not been mechanisms in place to deal with these situations. Unfortunately, none of these preventative activities makes the newspaper so people are not aware of how useful it is in practice. Had this type of system been in place in Virginia, it could very well have prevented the tragedy that just occurred there." http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/pubs/fire-feu-eval/eval-eng.pdf
I am irrelevant to the discussion, facts are what count, unless the Murderer is the Original Gun owner and Gun purchaser, very Rarely seen, Registration rarely helps solve any Crimes, not even one percent. You rely on Googled misinformation, I rely on experience and proven facts.
