70 year old Australian children's author Mem Fox on her way to a literacy conference in Milwaukee to deliver the keynote opening address, were detained and held for hours at LA airport despite having travelled to the US 116 times.

Ironically she was just about to release her new book "I'm Australian too" about multiculturalism

What is wrong with American Embassy staff and Customs and Borders Protection officers?

I remember reading Mem Fox's book "Koala Lou" over and over to my daughter when she was 3, (about a loved soft, round, cuddly Koala Lou, but her mother loved her most of all and told her so a hundred times a day).

This woman probably doesn't even swat flies, I think they've lost the plot in the US

scare mongering by white extremists or better supremacists, namely Donald Trump and his colleagues....

Just thinking of what you said,
imagine an American mother reading a book to her daughter about the 45 President of the United States, who therein claims he can grab every women by the puzzy.....

Boy we had it low with Abbott, but that low?

Anyway, as it stands the US would be the last country on the planet I would love calling home....
    Regards

It is far far worst then this as the son of Muhammad Ali a US born citizen with a US passport was held for hours and question at the border for what look like the 'sin' of being both a Muslim and bearing a Muslim name.

Yep, let 'em all in, I say - so what if there happens to be a few jihadists among them? Jihadists are just like the rest of us - they've had a bad press is all.

(Jesus bloody wept!! ( :wall: )

But not without a lot of damage I think Margot, it will be a long time before the world has confidence in a country that can so easily have a presdident voted in when the majority of people don't want him.

    Mate,
I had to laugh, and talking to my better half whether she could see me as a female, she burst into laughter.
I think for that I owe *cerberus* a big thank you...
I am far to often too serious, so laughter they say is the best medicine...
    All good,
    cheers

The lasting harm is the shame a lot of us are feeling that there is enough fellow citizens who would place such a 'man' in power as President and as a result the complete lack of faith in our system going forward.

For myself I would now support the breaking up of our nation into the more sane states and the red Trump states.

Our founders great experiment in government seems to had gone way off the track and only emergency surgery might at this point save us as a viable nation in my opinion.

The TSA employs thousands of "behavior detection officers" who scrutinize travelers to look for signs of "mal-intent" in airport screening areas. When the officers perceive such behaviors as stress, fear or deception in any given individual, they refer that person for secondary inspection and questioning. Probably this Aussie author was stressed out and fearful about Trump's America. If you don't look happy, you're more likely to be questioned. I felt the same way I visited Australia and was stopped by the officers for secondary inspection several times, while it happened only once at Heathrow. To avoid further troubles, you need to be mentally ready upon arrival.

I have family in the US but if they want to see me they can come here, I'm not setting foot in America.

US tourism is going to take a hit, by how much remains to be seen.

They should try traveling with two kids, I'm pretty sure I looked very stressed when I was en route.

I think they pulled her out because they're trying to give the impression they're not profiling, if they also detain little old ladies then nobody can accuse them of profiling... which is exactly what they're doing.

It's incredibly stressful for a 70 year old to be treated like a criminal, Mem Fox also mentioned an 80 year old Iranian women in a wheelchair, did she even survive the ordeal?

I had a Jewish American friend who was always pulled out of the line for secondary inspection. I think Fox is a Jewish surname and her ethnic background may have something to do with this incident and many Jewish people look somewhat Middle Eastern. Ms Fox may have failed to communicate well with a TSA officer because most Americans cannot understand Aussie English well, which brought her to the interrogation room along with Iranians.
