Default "Internet co-opted by terrorist"

I don't get the point of this. "The internet has been co-opted by terrorists"? When did this happen? Reading this short part of the article I included here they talk about terroist then switch the reteric and are talking about "anti-Semitic", "hate messages", and "racist messages".

Now I have ben accused of being "anti-Semitic" right here for simply not agreeing to PC talking points. So are they trying to say if you disagree with Israel's "official" position on certain subjects you are a terrorist now? They also talk about certain web sites that they claim teach people how to make bombs but yet they never identify just where these sites are.

If what they say is true just track the IP to whatever country it is coming from and let it become public just what countries are failing to remove these sites. I bet they won't do it because no one is stupid enough to have a site that teaches people to make bombs and so they don't exist. I think its more of an attempt to link what they interpret as "anti-semetic" with terrorism.

Wiesenthal Center official: Internet co-opted by terrorist groups
By STEVE LINDE
BRUSSELS

The Internet has emerged as "the virtual university of terrorism," the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Rabbi Abraham Cooper told a high-level international conference in Brussels last week.

Speaking in the elegant Egmont Palace at an Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe forum on curbing "hate messages" in the media and on the Internet, he urged the OSCE and other international agencies to work together to "diminish, if not eliminate" Web sites being used by terrorist organizations to promote their causes.

Cooper, the associate dean of the Los Angeles-based center, said there were up to 600 "problematic sites," some of which carried anti-Semitic and racist messages while others even served as instruction manuals on how to make bombs and carry out terrorist attacks.

"Without any doubt, the Internet today has been co-opted by terrorist groups who present to all of us existential threats," he said, "and I believe we are only at the very beginning in civil society of grasping the enormity of that challenge."

The conference was hosted by Belgian Foreign Minister Karel de Gucht, who calmly called at the outset for dialogue and responsibility in the media in the wake of the Danish cartoon crisis.

He and other speakers who followed him also urged Arab satellite networks to follow Europe's example, and not allow racist or terrorist messages to be broadcast in the media, such as anti-Semitic programs on Hizbullah's Al-Manar television.

Despite all the time you seem to spend on the net, it's pretty obvious that you haven't explored some of the darker depths of it. There is indeed a wealth of information on how to do all manner of illicit things online. The beauty of the net is that it allows information to be exchanged freely across social boundries. So, alongside information on model airplanes and tropical fish, you can discover how to make bombs or grow drugs. If you don't believe these things are out there you simply don't know where to look.

People who engage in these types of thinking are often the terrorists we are worried about.

Whether you in fact are an anti-Semite is besides the point. There are absolutely plenty of sites out there dedicated to racist, xenophobic ideology, and they don't need to bother with people who 'aren't PC' to make this point.

They're out there, but a responsible paper is hardly going to print a url to http://www.learnhowtomakebombsandblowupallthejews.com in their article. Use some common sense.

Often the information isn't available on the web, but rather private FTP's, newsgroups, or other less manageable and trackable sites. Furthermore, there is a fine line to tread between proper policing and censorship. Often sites may not have illicit information on them, but rather provide ways for those interested to connect with each other. Finally, sites can be hosted in countries that take a limited interest in controling their citizen's servers.

Ever heard of the Anarchist's Cookbook? I downloaded a pdf once a while out of curiosity, and it wasn't hard for a casual highschooler to do back then. If I was actually interested in terrorism I'm sure I could find a wealth of information. This stuff does is fact exist whether or not you want to believe it.

If this stuff is on the internet it is because the powers that be want it on the internet Probably the want it there so they can point to how bad the internet is to give them the excuse to roll out "internet 2" they have had in the works for a long time. Total censorship internet. Problem reaction solution.

Total nonsense. They don't have to publish the actual URL's, all they have to do is figure out what countries these servers are coming from and publish some articles in some main stream news papers about this country or that country hosts terrorist bomb making information sites.

Manageable by who? If all web traffic goes through the intellegence agencies then it would be a piece of cake to police thes sites. I'm sure they have all sorts of secret software that can do almost anything with.

I have no doubt it exists only because they want it to exist.

It was a good effort, TarBaby. I was rooting for you. Too bad your points didn't get through the tinfoil.

P.S.: Here's an explanation of the Cookbook, plus links to it and other "explosive" books:

Ah...excuse me but I actually was foolish enough to click on that link. All I saw was the fact that the book exists and is for sale at book stores.

Now how that translates in your warped little mind into an "internet full of terrorists" is beyond me. Seems like you might want to visit some bookstores to find out what they are selling instead af bashing the internet. I think I have proved my point thanks to your link. Thank you, please form a line for autographs.

I don't know if it is "full of terrorists" but there is certainly information available out there that would help a terrorist operate. To think otherwise is just plain foolish. If something like the AC is available on bookshelves then you can be pretty sure it's in downloadable form as well.

I think that you missed the original point of the net. Millions of interconnected computers over thousands of differant routes were created based off the original idea of making communication possible even after widespread nuclear apocolypse. It is inherantly decentralized and thus impossible to control completely. Even if the goverment took a proactive stance and illegally blocked these sites, there are a number of non web based way of continuing to access this information. Try to understand the differance between "internet" and "world wide web." There is much more than http out there.

A car can be of use to a terrorist...so what?

What is it with you people? If there is a threat expose the darn thing. All you are doing is fear mongering with absolutely nothing of substance to present here.

You are the paronoid freak that sees terrorist all over the net but yet you somehow have failed to prove one bit of it. And I'm the one wearing a tin foil hat? LOL

Default Arguing your posts != agreeing with everything in that story

I'm not sure what you're trying to say here? I didn't write this article, and I don't think 600 'problematic' sites count as the internet being "co-opted." But, I was trying to respond to some of your off base assumptions, and your notion that there is no information on bomb making out there.

Quote:

Fear mongering is one thing, presenting reasons why I disagree with your post is another. Shutting down this information is not as simple as some goverment suit flipping the "Bad Things on the Internet" switch to OFF. My point was that the net is inherantly resistant to control. Just about any measures to stop illicit material will be routed around, and eventually become obsolete. I assume though that the conferance mentioned in the article discussed ways of dealing with the problem.

Quote:

I already mentioned the Anarchist's Cookbook, which is easy enough to find. If you are looking for sites that advocate the extreme rascism and Nazi rhetoric Cooper mentioned, check out Stormfront as a start. I'm sure you can find plenty of links from there. If you'd like a nice creative answer try http://70.86.163.114/~bareback/cgi-b....cgi?pg=topics on for size. That would be a vile message board about how people are eager and actively trying to get AIDS, and spread it to others. I'm not sure if that counts as 'terrorism' per-se, but it sure is dedicated to dealing out long term murder in the one of the most horrendous ways possible. I've also read exerps from Al-Qaieda handbooks on how to beat lie detectors, and make detonators in my casual browsing. Raytri's link had examples of other texts that I am sure could be tracked down online. That seems like a pretty good start from a person who isn't in the loop.

I don't have a nice list of these sites because, frankly, I'm not interested in finding them. I'm also wary to go searching for them for you, since I work as a teacher at a public high school that monitors all web traffic. Considering the NSA is also monitoring web traffic these days I'd rather not have illicit google searches on my record.

I didn't say terrorists were 'all over the net.' In fact, I mentioned that it was probably untrue.
"I don't know if it is "full of terrorists"
I simply said that it was possible to find information that would aid terrorists online. That seems like common sense.

When you allude to Jews being 'devil worshippers' clearly your opinions push past "Anti Zionist" in some regards. Jews worship the same God (I assume) you do.

I think you answered your own question right here. You know if you go to a site like that the NSA would know. Case closed.

If i said Jews...then I meant Zionists. You people keep saying I bash Jews over and over and over that it was just a matter of time your subliminal suggestions would pay off and cause me to say what you wanted so you could cry about it. You zionists are good at that sort of stuff I have to admit.
