Default Sperm cells extracted from bone marrow

Might this turn the gay-marriage debate on its head?
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/...cle2444462.ece

Quote:
Women might soon be able to produce sperm in a development that could allow lesbian couples to have their own biological daughters, according to a pioneering study published today.

Scientists are seeking ethical permission to produce synthetic sperm cells from a woman's bone marrow tissue after showing that it possible to produce rudimentary sperm cells from male bone-marrow tissue.

The researchers said they had already produced early sperm cells from bone-marrow tissue taken from men. They believe the findings show that it may be possible to restore fertility to men who cannot naturally produce their own sperm.
So it's a fertility treatment, that just happens to allow lesbians to conceive a child biologically related to both parents. It's also part of a larger effort to take bone marrow stem cells and try to coax them to differentiate into different kinds of cells.

It won't work for gay male couples, because they lack ovaries and eggs.

Also, because of the lack of a Y chromosome, all children of such unions will be female.

The science is still very young; they haven't actually made viable sperm yet.

If this technology is viable and feasible, and eventually becomes approved, the religious, scientific, and political implications would be of gargantuan enormity. 1,000's of textbooks will have to be rewritten, 10,000's of politicians will be debating the issue, and 1,000,000's of people will be arguing about every aspect of the technology!

My first thought was, "What will happen to the world when men are no longer necessary?" Interesting concept.

Default The Worms will convene outside Brixton Bus Station.

We only need 'em to make babies.

I was gonna say "and do stuff like work on cars", but my mechanic is a lesbian. My florist is a man, but he's gay.

I got it! We still need men around to kill creepy crawly things!

We'd better take preemptive action and jail all feminists!

I figure that before or later all sort of ways to breed are possible.. The development of the computer science has enable most rapid development of the biotechnology.. There will likely be a breaking point in the accumulation of the knowledge, which after most wondrous things becames reachable.. Increasing awareness of the functioning of the body in the very smallest level will likely make genemanipulation even an easy art and make even completely artificial additions to the human genome possible or such wonders as artificial wombs for babies..

It is very interesting in the pace of few decades, but the real interest comes into the picture in the periods of several hundreds of years or even milleniums.. This especially, if the people seek to manipulate the emotional setting of the future generations.. One generation tosses the following generation towards one evolution pathway and the following generation does the same.. After one generation is prettier, smarter, more ambigious and better with people, the next generation faces heightened standards and even further increased competition.. The most likely decision in this situation is to play the game even further bringing with time - maybe - even grouse exaggaration of the desired features and ever swifting and moving image for human perfection.. As the real-life demands of the modern society have decreased or radically moved to what they have been in the evolutionary history, this kind of escalating development might bring in the end human entities of rather weird or even suprising nature..

For 12thMan, I have to noticed that after some time it migth be possible to breed children with completely outside the normal biological method like the mentioned artifical womb.. This would mean that for breeding not only men are innecessary, but also women.. The changes are that even normal heterosexual partners might utilize this method to avoid the pains and the complications of the difficult human pregnancy..

Some feminists would love it. MOST of us would not.
