Default Nuclear energy, clean and safe

If we want to be more energy independent I think we should build several safe nuclear power plants for not only energy, but for use in medical testing and other very advanced technology for the positive benefit of all mankind.
If we do not, oil will be the primary fuel for decades to come.
I am not against oil as it is used in many positive ways and in nearly every product we use. We are much better now at using oil in a clean and responsible manner and it will always be a part of our world. As techology improves, all forms of energy will become much cleaner, oil, coal, coke, nuclear, wind, solar, methane, hydrogen, hydroelectric and so forth. We must not hinder ourselves to only a few forms of energy.

Default ...

I've often thought that this could be a good idea, but there are so many barriers that prevent the construction of nuclear power plants. First, the government won't build them, they only regulate them. So, the private sector is responsible for building and maintaining them, but nuclear power plants pose a gihugical cost. It takes about $3 billion to build a nuclear power plant, a hefty investment On top of that, they are subject (and for good reason) to scrutiny by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. If something doesn't fly with them, they impose fines in the 10s of thousands of dollars. Another huge expense. However, they are a great source of relatively safe, clean energy if they're taken care of.
