A terrible series of seven bombs exploded on Mumbai commuter trains earlier today. They exploded almost simultaneously; a trait we have seen before. A horrific atrocity, the slaughter is reported to be horrendous.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/5169332.stm "The first explosion went off at about 1830 local time (1300 GMT), during the peak of the evening rush hour in the suburbs on the busy Western Railway. Correspondents spoke of scenes of pandemonium, with people jumping from trains and bodies flung onto tracks. There have been a number of bomb attacks in Mumbai in recent years. The city and the capital Delhi have been put on high alert, and Mumbai's entire rail network has been shut down."

But the jury is still out on just what 'Al Qaeda' is; an 'idea' or an actual, structured organisation. The British government's own report on '7/7' determined that there was no evidence of any direct link between the bombers and any 'Al Qaeda' type network - they did it independently, with assistance from like-minded nutters, of course. (The report makes it clear that the British government is not even sure what 'Al Qaeda' is).
Possibly the same here (too early to be sure, of course) - a group of individuals who share the same worldview and tactics as those expounded by Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri. When people are being slaughtered like this I suppose it becomes somewhat of an academic point as to whether it was an organisation or an independent cell that is responsible; that only becomes important in considering how to stop it from happening again.

I think al Qaeda is more like Communism....in that it's an idea; an extremist idea, but based on their fanatic, intolerant, religious beliefs. They learned how to make bombs and they are fascinated with the concept of blowing people up. They seek to rule the world and tell the rest of the world how to live. Trying to draw a direct connection to bin Laden doesn't work anymore. If they've bought into the "idea" and are acting on their own.....that's what he has asked all the followers of his idea to do. The people who did this today are every bit as dangerous as bin Laden and it doesn't matter if they never trained under al Qaeda. They are all part of it.

...this according to BBC evening news (just now). Unconfirmed reports that RDX may have been the explosive used.
No group has claimed responsibility; suspicion is falling primarily on a Kashmiri-motivated atack, also, of course, Islamic militants in general. Said to be over 300 people injured.

how come we never hear of Indians bombing civilian trains in Pakistan? It can't have anything to do with civility could it? Not all Muslims are terrorists, but a disproportionate number of terrorists are Muslim.

Have you seriously never heard of this? Or, just trying to make a point?(invalidated by the reality, sadly).

I know of plenty of attacks by Muslims targeting Hindu civilians. So which recent civilian directed attacks on Muslims are you speaking of?
