Default What you never heard of Abu Ayyub al-Masri

What? You have not heard of the famous Abu Ayyub al-Masri before? Oh, yea, he's bad to the bone, for sure, and a really leader too. A real bad guy, along with his driver. His driver is a was a famous al Qaeda leader too. He was in the number two man right behind Abu Ayyub. And our side got one of the bad guys - yea for our side. It is headline news, well worth the top spot on Google News.

I will really sleep better tonight knowing he is out of action, and Muslim Arab blood stains the streets of Baghdad. The world is a safer place...soon the war might be over with this key leader gone.

Peace.
No. But those are the only ones that make it to the newspapers.

CNN could not independently confirm the report and CNN's Michael Ware in Baghdad said Iraqi officials would not say whether al-Masri was in custody.
So? Everyone already is aware of that. It's a new and breaking story, after all. You sound like you're hoping it's not true, though.
Skepticism about the accuracy of a new and breaking report does not have any bearing on whether or not one hopes it is true. If I saw an a breaking story that said a drug had been found that cured cancer, AIDS, the common cold, and hemmorhoids, I would be just as skeptical until it was verified.

Default let's wait

I'll wait for confirmation.

If it's true, great. If not, we can still hope that it won't be too long before we hear a report of his death with definite confirmation.

It's looking like a false alarm. Too bad; the guy really needs to be sent to a different plane of existence.

One disappointing trend that has developed is that the Iraqi government simply cannot be counted on to tell the truth. Not only does it damage their credibility, it casts doubt on their fundamental committment to reality or accountability.

Default It must have been another Abu Ayyub al-Masri?

Iraqis back off the claim, U.S. denies he is in custody, as does al-Qaeda's Islamic State in Iraq

Last evening's reports of the capture of al-Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Ayyub al-Masri appear to be incorrect. Brigadier General Abdul-Karim Khalaf, the spoksman for the Interior Ministry, initially reported al-Masri was wounded in a gunfight, and an aide was killed while trying to enter the city of Balad. Khalaf has since pulled back from this claim, while the deputy interior minister said the information could not be confirmed, as did the U.S. military. "We do not believe that he was either killed or wounded last night," said Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Garver, a MNF-Iraq spokesman.

Looks like a case of mistaken identity. Iraqis are now saying it didn't happen.

I think that it is more than Iraq I think it is the entire region. Basically the Middle East is full of lies and over statements. I wish that some would take that into account when applying the WMD mistake. Many in the Middle East like Hezbollah and Hamas say they will do one thing and then do another. I would think this should be taken into account when it comes to the WMD. Not just Hezbollah and Hamas but those in the region probably gave us bad info.

Oh, agreed. All the interlocking relationships -- tribal, religious, national, political, what have you -- makes things extremely complex. Things are rarely what they seem, and people tend to see what they want to see and say what they think you want to hear.

One of my favorite examples of that sort of thing was polls of Sunni Iraqis showing that many of them think they're actually in the majority in Iraq.
