Thumbs up Top Al Qaeda Killed in Afghanistan

Good news.

Al-Qaida commander killed in Afghanistan

CAIRO, Egypt - One al-Qaida's top commanders in Afghanistan, Abu Laith al-Libi was killed in Afghanistan, a Web site used by militant groups said Thursday.

Al-Libi was a key link between the Taliban and al-Qaida. He led and al-Qaida training camp and appeared in a number of Internet videos. The U.S. says he was likely behind the February 2007 bombing at the U.S. base at Bagram in Afghanistan during a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney. The attack killed 23 people."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080131/..._afghanistan_8

"A knowledgeable Western official said that "it appears at this point that Al-Libi has met his demise," but declined to talk about the circumstances. "It was a major success in taking one of the top terrorists in the world off the street," the official said. He added that the death occurred "within the last few days."

Al-Libi was a key link between the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

He was listed among the 12 most-wanted men the U.S. offered a US$200,000 reward for five."

Maybe the next president can extract us from the fubar in Iraq and focus on Afghanistan and get more of these guys. You know, the guys who actually attacked us on 9/11.

If they are killing al qaeda leaders in Iraq, how is that not a success? You said killing al qaeda was good, why is not good in Iraq? Why not kill them where ever you can find them?

I am not against killing the terrorists WE CREATED in Iraq. But you do know that "Al Qaeda" and "Al Qaeda in Iraq" are two seperate groups. That the latter did not exist before the invasion and is not the group that attacked us on 9/11. Instead, the "in Iraq" group is a new bunch of radicals that wants to create the Islamic State of Iraq and their focus is ENTIRELY within Iraq. The "Al Qaeda in Iraq" group is also widely hated in that country is has no chance of gaining any real power, especially since the Sunni leaders in that country turned against them.

So the "Al Qaeda in Iraq" group is a pain for the Iraqi governemnt, but is not the same group that attacked us before the invasion of Iraq, nor has ever attacked the USA outside of Iraq. And the threat of them attacking the USA outside of Iraq is minimal if at all. While the threat of the real Al Qaeda in Pakistan is much more real and significant. This is why the huge efforts in Iraq and lesser efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan seem to be a dumb way to fight the threat of terrorism.

So like, doesn't it seem to you, that we oughta like, "know a little more", if we have all these drones flyin' around and stuff?

So few and far between... well, the ones you know about are. You're reading a thread based on a press release. Do you think they should make a press release on every piece of intelligence gathered?

You mean like "read about it in the New York Times" type of announcement of our intelligence capabilities? You do realize that every time we announce an intel victory, al Qaeda learns a little bit more about how we gather information on them, don't you?
