Default US intel: al-Qaida may move outside Iraq

As further proof of the effectiveness of the surge, al Qaeda is looking to run and hide elsewhere:
Quote:
Al-Qaida, increasingly shut down in Iraq, is establishing cells in other countries as Osama bin Laden's organization uses a "safe haven" in Pakistan's tribal region to train for attacks in Afghanistan, the Middle East, Africa and the United States, the U.S. intelligence chief said Tuesday.
I wonder if this means we'll do away with the politically-expedient term "al Qaeda in Iraq" and recognize the whole organization as a danger. It's certainly looking like we're willing to wait until the next attack to occur before we'll take in major action in Pakistan.

And, I love this little paragraph -- presented almost as an aside:
Quote:
In other troubling parts of the world, the intelligence director said North Korea was proceeding with a nuclear program despite an agreement last year to suspend operations and Iran was "keeping open the option" of building nuclear weapons.
"In other news, North Korea has suspended its agreement and is pursuing nuclear weapons, while Iran is keeping the option open (read: progressing by working on overlapping technology). Now back to Skip Blowover! and this week's weather, Skip?"

Yeah I've been reading alot of articles and such referring to al Qaeda (foreign fighters primarily) leaving.

Iraq is becoming an untenable front in the war for them.

Jus a year ago they where doing so well killing people that the Democrats where ready to hand Iraq over to them...now Democrats are still ready to hand Iraq over to them.
For some winning is undefinable, success just an obstacle to failure.

They're apparently having such a hard time recruiting young men to join the cause that they're having to use women with down's syndrome to pull off attacks.

Default Hang in there guys....

There's still hope if you're willing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The Democrats may win this Presidential cycle and we can see a retreat shortly thereafter.

Hang in there!

There are many ways that it improves our security here. One of which is that it proves they CAN actually be beaten. It also proves to the rest of the world, except the Democrats, that you CAN take them down militarily in their own region. Now they'll have even more trouble reaching us here. It is a definitve, concrete example that al Qaeda's ability to recruit is now severely diminished.

I'm sure there are more that other people can come up with. Those are just off the top of my head.

...it will insure a Republican presidential victory. The democrats have been whining about the US being defeated already in Iraq for the past 3 years. The democrats have been such great moral support for our troops

I understand where you're coming from BB, but I don't think it will insure a Republican Presidential victory. The Presidential race is on and heating up fast. The mainstream media isn't going to keep this story on the front burner very long before it gets buried. The Presidential race is by no means insured for either party.

In the meantime, the average citizen will be dazzled with speeches and promises that never actually materialize. What's funny is, when the promises don't come to fruition they actually have the gall to be surprised and outraged. Like this hasn't happened since the invention of politics.

It proves that they can be beaten? No one doubts that you can win militarily against terrorists. What is in doubt is whether or not you can keep them form attacking our civilians. You then jump to the conclusion that this means they will have trouble reaching us here. Where exactly did that come from? It seems to me that if they are sheltered in Pakistan without having to worry about getting attacked by the US military they would be more capable of attacking the US. You also jump to the conclusion that this somehow diminishes their ability to recruit. How many Al Qaeda members were recruited from Iraq when we weren't there? Slim to none. The problem with the whole neocon line of thinking is that if Al Qaeda was being hurt by the war in Iraq, they just wouldn't go to Iraq. They weren't there before, so why would they hurt they go there if it hurt them in there goal to kill innocent civilians in Western countries?

I am very happy that we are beating Al Qaeda in Iraq. The more they are on the run the safer our troops are, but this doesn't validate the strategy of invading a country that doesn't have hardly any terrorists in it to fight the war on terror.

Haven't you been saying for months that the surge was making things worse, not better? Have you changed your mind?
