Default No link between Saddam/al Qaeda: Pentagon

Quote:
WASHINGTON (AFP) - A detailed Pentagon study confirms there was no direct link between Iraqi ex-leader Saddam Hussein and the Al Qaeda network, debunking a claim President George W. Bush's administration used to justify invading Iraq.

That makes the pentagon, the 9.11 commission, and the CIA, all liars.

Or the administration was lying.

Or, at best, the administration wasn't really even concerned with the truth.

Well, really, there's no way to prove the intent was to deceive, but certainly, the administration's previous comment's about the connection count as utter BS.

This is old news my friend. The administration has long said that there were no operational ties between Saddam and al-Qeada, only that there had been contact between them, which this report does not refute.

See:

"The panel's staff reported on Wednesday that there were contacts between Iraq and al Qaeda, "but they do not appear to have resulted in a collaborative relationship."

In challenging the commission's finding, Bush and his aides argued that their previous assertions about the ties between Iraq and the terrorist organization were justified by the contacts that occurred.

"This administration never said that the 9/11 attacks were orchestrated between Saddam and al Qaeda," Bush said. "We did say there were numerous contacts between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda."

Officials with the Sept. 11 commission yesterday tried to soften the impact of the staff's finding, noting that the panel, formally known as the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, agrees with the administration on key points. "Were there contacts between al Qaeda and Iraq? Yes," Thomas H. Kean (R), the panel's chairman, said at a news conference. "What our staff statement found is there is no credible evidence that we can discover, after a long investigation, that Iraq and Saddam Hussein in any way were part of the attack on the United States."

The panel's executive director, Philip D. Zelikow, said the finding referred to a lack of evidence of "operational" ties between Iraq and al Qaeda. "

Yeah I remember from some time back that while Bush would bring up 9/11 a good half dozen times when discussing Iraq he never claimed they were behind it or even major supporters of Al Queda.

The statement is true, although it is meant to be sarcastic. Funny how, it is not accompanied by evidence to the contrary. If you wish to make a contrarian point, it is customary to provide evidence of such a point.

Now, see, if you know that Bush tried to make people think there was a connection between 9/11 and Iraq, and you also know that his speechwriters made very sure that he didn't technically (like in a lawyer sense) say that there was a connection -- how can you still like the guy?

Sometimes I get the feeling that Bush-supporters just admire him as a salesman, or something. Like, if you can lie and get away with it, that's sort of admirable? Is that the idea?

Remember that name? Wasn't he the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq after the war started? Coincidence?
