Icon14 Saudi Arabia says arrests 520 terrorism suspects

Quote:
RIYADH (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia has detained 520 suspected al Qaeda-linked militants since January, accusing some of them of planning attacks against an oil installation in the kingdom, the Interior Ministry said on Wednesday.

A ministry statement read out on Saudi television said the detainees were part of a wider plot managed from abroad and involving militant groups seized last year.

Among the detainees were some of Asian and African nationality. Some planned to use car bombs in attacks an oil and a security target in coordination with al Qaeda second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri who would send fighters from Iraq, Afghanistan and North Africa to back them up.

"Security forces managed to arrest one cell in the Eastern Province led by African residents ... their concern was to get close to people working in the oil sector in order to find work in oil installations," the statement said.

"They planned in fact to attack an oil installation and security target with rigged cars," it added.

The kingdom, which has faced a campaign of violence by al Qaeda-linked militants since 2003, arrested hundreds of suspects in 2007 but because of a tough security crackdown has not faced any major attacks for over two years.

The ministry statement said a total of 701 people had been arrested in recent months but 181 had been released for lack of evidence, leaving 520 in custody.

The last major attack by militants was a failed attempt to storm at the world's largest oil processing plant at Abqaiq in the Eastern Province in February 2006.

Are you $hitting me Duh?

Apparently human rights and democracy are only important in countries that don't give us their oil.

A women was recently given 90 lashes because she was raped in Saudi Arabia, not to mention the fact that converting from Islam to Christianity is punishable by death. Great allies.

I thought it was WMDs, and supporting terrorism

We wouldn't even be in the middle east if it weren't for their oil, and guess who forces us to look elsewhere for oil?

Yes the woman had been raped.

But the lashes were for committing another crime. Not for being raped.

I don't like Saudi Arabia. I feel weird saying that, 'cause it's a whole country and I don't like the idea that I dislike a whole country. I guess I should say that I have nothing against the Saudi people themselves, and any individual Saudi citizen is probably just as good a person as one would find anywhere else.

But that culture is like all of the things I don't like about American culture, magnified by ten and without any of the good things that make me love America; like a strong, at least partly successful civil rights movement that is still in motion (perhaps losing momentum but we'll get it back). So much religious persecution. No rights for women -- heck, no rights for men! And whether or not it's a violent state or not is somewhat relative, since they seem to be causing a lot of harm around the world (and here), but then, nobody causes harm to the world, or America, like America. So it's not like the Saudis could ever be our worst enemies, we're our own worst enemies. But Saudi Arabia seems to be so violent toward its own people, which is somewhat easier to qualify. Lashing are not, in my opinion, a good thing. Not for any crime, certainly not for things that shouldn't even be crimes, definitely not for being the victim of a crime. My concept of justice and the Saudi Arabian concept of justice seem to be at odds. Of course the same is true is of me and my own government, sometimes. But at least all Americans seem to agree that it's not okay to torture other Americans (well, most of us do). That's ... something, I guess. We're not too terribly cruel to ourselves.

To me, this reads like an employment reshuffle. But then, so does the whole Iraq war.

I don't like Saudi Arabia the way some conservatives don't like the Soviet Union, I guess is what I'm saying. It's not that they think there's anything wrong with any individual Soviet. But they wish the Soviets would have gotten their act together sooner. And I wish that Saudi Arabia would get its act together and stop doing horrible things to women in the name of religion. Just my own opinion, and if any Saudi is offended, I apologize and I owe you a cup of coffee.

I mean, I know how it is -- the whole world is waiting for America to get its act together and stop putting people like Bush in power. We're the baddest nation there's ever been, we need to be more responsible than this. Spider-Man taught me that. Great power, great responsibility.

Do they have Spider-Man in Saudi Arabia? That would solve everything.
