Senate Intel Chair: Torture Did Not Lead To Bin Laden In Any Way

More and more evidence suggests a key piece of intelligence -- the first link in the chain of information that led U.S. intelligence officials to Osama bin Laden -- wasn't tortured out of its source. And, indeed, that torture actually failed to produce it.

"To the best of our knowledge, based on a look, none of it came as a result of harsh interrogation practices," said Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee in a wide-ranging press conference.

Moreover, Feinstein added, nothing about the sequence of events that culminated in Sunday's raid vindicates the Bush-era techniques, nor their use of black sites -- secret prisons, operated by the CIA.

"Absolutely not, I do not," Feinstein said. "I happen to know a good deal about how those interrogations were conducted, and in my view nothing justifies the kind of procedures that were used."

I'll trust the current head of the CIA with knowledge of the truth...over a California politician

CIA Director Leon Panetta stomped on the White House’s political script when he told Tuesday night’s broadcast of NBC Nightly News that the waterboarding of jihadi detainees contributed information that led to the location and killing of Osama bin Laden.

We had multiple series of sources that provided information with regards to this situation… clearly some of it came from detainees [and] they used these enhanced interrogation techniques against some of those detainees,” he told NBC anchor Brian Williams.

When asked by Williams if water-boarding was part of the “enhanced interrogation techniques,” Panetta simply said “that’s correct.”

Perhaps because it was not the waterboarding that did the trick.

The CIA declines to comment, but current and former intelligence officials tell ABC News that 11 top al Qaeda figures were all held at one point on a former Soviet air base in one Eastern European country. Several of them were later moved to a second Eastern European country.

All but one of these 11 high-value al Qaeda prisoners were subjected to the harshest interrogation techniques in the CIA's secret arsenal, the so-called "enhanced interrogation techniques" authorized for use by about 14 CIA officers and first reported by ABC News on Nov. 18.

    You understand rendition?

If you had already authorized WB'ing at Gitmo, there would be no need to secret off combatants so that hired hands can do your dirty work for you.

I despise rendition - wtf was Clinton thinking??? - despicable and cowardly!
If you truly believe a dirty job must be done, then do it your d*mn yourself!

And apparently, it had to be done. The proof is in the pudding. The info obtained; the devil dispatched.

and just for the record...they did get the couriers name...his nom de guerre. What took time was unraveling just what XXX's real name was.

It hurts to be wrong, especially when so publicly, but there you have it.

Given that the nineteenth century was the century of Socialism, & Liberalism...it does not necessarily follow that the twentieth century must also be a century of Socialism & Liberalism: doctrines pass...humanity remains, and it may rather be expected that this will be a century of authority ... of Fascism. For if the nineteenth century was a century of individualism it may be expected that this will be the century of collectivism and hence the century of the State. - Mussolini

With all of the opportunities Panetta had to answer this question when asked directly...multiple times...why didn't he simply say "no it did not help"?

Really, theres the bottom line. he could have made this statement any of the times he was asked, yet he didn't.

    Of course that info helped.

I didn't realize Panetta was an honest liberal.

He's a credit to his side.

I've actually always sort of liked Panetta...going back to his days under Clinton...he seemed like a straight shooter...tells it like it is.

He used to be a Republican...before switching to Democrat in 1971.

It would have been so easy for Pametta to stick to the liberal script but he didn't.

And Feinstein is the typical liberal who sees the death of Bin Laden as nothing other than an opportunity to win political points.

Actually its a Federal crime to lie to Congress. Haul Feinstein before Congress, put her under oath and maybe we could get the truth out of even her.
