All of you blaming Bush for 9/11 are idiots. Sorry, but you are. Its Clinton's fault, and I'll tell you why. First and foremost, Clinton at one point knew where Osama was could have gotten him. So that alone shows that if Clinton had taken some kind of action, Osama would have never carried out the 9/11 attacks. Secondly, I would like to bring up the skirmish that took place in Mogadishu, Somalia when we were trying to kill Mohammed Aidid. At the end of that battle, the US had lost 17 marines, as opposed to Aidid's hundreds of soldiers dead. We had clearly won the day and could have carried out the killing of Aidid. But what does Clinton do? He orders all US troops to be withdrawn from Somalia. And what did this tell every enemy of America? Put up a small resistance and the US will retreat. That is incentive enough for someone like Osama to launch a terrorist attack against America.
In another note, you who say that Bush did nothing, consider this: Clinton was in office for 8 years and did nothing, where as Bush was in office for 8 months. And right after we found out the culprit behind 9/11, Bush ordered an invasion of Afghanistan to get Osama. Clinton, on the other hand, could have gotten Osama, but simply chose not to. What a shame. |

Quote:
9/11 is the fault of Osama bin Laden and US foreign policy put together. No one individual in the US can be blamed for it. Specific examples: Yes, Clinton (at different times) knew where OBL was. There was an occasion in Afghanistan when we had the chance to bomb a camp that OBL was at. Unfortunatly US intel indicated that there were large numbers of non-combatant women and children at that camp. In addition, the Lewinsky scandal was in full fling and the Republicans weren't going to tolerate anything that took attention from their witch hunt. So the attacks were called off and secondary targets were hit: the infamous "aspirin" factory" in Sudan (which how the Right can believe that Saddam was hiding WMDs but the Sudanese weren't is beyond me) and other AQ camps in Afghanistan. On Somalia, its interesting to point out that after that engagement the Republican controlled Congress had levied threats of withdrawing funding for the troops overseas (they also did the same thing when Clinton began bombing Serbia during the Kosovo operations). The entire operation was spun as a total failure by the right and Clinton was pressured into with drawing the troops. You say Clinton did nothing for 8 years, so I assume that by "nothing" you mean that invading soveriegn nations is the only way to solve terrorism? At the time, this flew in the face of all counter-terrorism tactics and thinkers. During the 80's and 90's, terrorism was viewed as a primarily law enforcement issue, not a military one. And in this, he did as much as he could. Let's break down each of the AQ attacks and their responses: World Trade Center Bombing #1: Bombers were arrested, tried, and imprisoned. The masterminds of the bombing (the so-called Blind Sheik and his followers) were also arrested and are spending their time behind bars. Khobar Towers: The US attempted to investigate the bombings (which occured in Saudi Arabia) and arrest those responsible. Unfortunately our ever-loyal allies in the House of Saud blocked every effort we made. They insisted that they would conduct the operation. Several months later, several individuals "confessed" (likely after severe toture at the hands of the Saudi government agents) and were executed. The Saudis said that the matter was solved. First Chance to Bomb OBL in Afghan.: Osama bin Laden was reported as being in a camp in Afghanistan in the mid 90's. Clinton admin officials looked into arranging a strike against him. The plan was in its final phases when it was revealed that the camp contained large numbers of civilians including royalty from they UAE that were visiting OBL at the time. (He was at the time seen as a great hero of Islam for his actions against the Soviets) The bombing was called off to avoid causing an international incident with our Gulf Allies. Somalia: While AQ forces were in Somalia running training camps, they were not the only groups there. Hizballah, Hamas, the ETA, and other paramilitary and terrorist groups had experts in the area training Somali militias. You can't say that it was an AQ operation when the fighter pool was so heavily diluted, although it was a terrorist feeding frenzy. Destruction of the US African embassies: This prompted the second series of bombings I described earlier, although these were denounced by the Republican party as attempts by the President to "distract the US from his own infidelity". Bombing of the USS Cole: While Clinton ordered no strikes after this event he did order the US Navy to institute a new policy. This policy made anything within 100 yards of a US warship into Sovereign US territory and authorized US warships to fire on any unauthorized craft that came that close. And of course while all this was happening Clinton was recieving regular briefings on AQ and terrorism in general. He created a number of intel and special operations task forces to prosecute terrorist targets and was described by Republicans at the time with "being too obsessed with terrorism". So how again did he do nothing?

So I guess we can forget he said that "Nobody knew Al qaeda existed yet" and claimed he couldn't capture Osama Bin Laden because "The CIA refused to certify he was behind the '93 bombing". I'm going to have to blame this on clinton for ignoring and downplaying his responisibilities for his own interests. You really thought America did enough after the '93 Bombing? You didn't think the government and the Press were trying to keep the majority of the public in the dark about the gobal growing hate and danger? Personally, I think he acted the way he always acts which is he does nothing he thinks can risk good poll numbers. This is the core train-of-thought for cowards, not leaders. He refused to take the responsibility and to get involved in the Middle East like the last four Presidents who were heavily involved in the Middle East. He chose to give people something to read another way.
