Default Bush Says U.S. Should Have Bombed Auschwitz

Running out of things to bomb during his last months in office, Bush is using his lame-duck year to recount missed bombing opportunities from previous administrations.

He was asked a question..."Should Roosevelt have bombed Auswicz (sp?), knowing it was a 'death camp'?" What exactly do you think he should have said? Turn the ovens up higher?

It was nothing but a P.R. thing. If he would have said "no," then the liberals would be condemning him for being anti-semitic. There was no right answer he could have said, in the mind of the liberal propaganda machine.

That's a dumb question to ask in 2008. An attempt to somehow link Bush to the holocaust or what??

So you think it was the right decision that we didn't bomb the train tracks leading to Auschwitz?

Default Why didn't we?

I always kind of wondered why we didn't. I figured it was one of those fog of war things, wasn't it? During the war, did even military intelligence know what was going on there?

Can't say that I know for sure, but the above linked article makes it seem that we did:

The issue of bombing the Nazi death camps or the rail lines leading to them has been debated for years -- and the lack of action was interpreted by some as a sign of Allied indifference.

Maybe he should have responded like many of you Bush bashers respond to Iraq.

"Well if the filthy worthless Jews couldn't fight for themselves then they deserved to die.

It wasn't OUR problem."

My understanding has always been that some people knew what was going on -- it was a matter of military intelligence after all -- but that people really didn't grasp what was happening at the death camps until the war was pretty much over. The Nazis really stepped up their schedule towards the end, almost like they knew that their days were numbered and they wanted to kill as many people as they could. Freakin' bizarre. So when the fighting was over and they started doing the real counting and it turned out that an honest-to-Elvis holocaust had happened, most people were surprised at its scope.

Whether the people who knew what was going on in Auschwitz had told the people in charge of whether or not to bomb the tracks, that's what I'm wondering.

Default simple government mantra for dubya

if there is a foreign policy issue, then bomb the country into submission
if there is a domestic policy issue then cut taxes for the wealthy (and borrow heavily since it's our kids who will have to pay the obligation)
