Default Florida lawmakers debating "I believe" plate

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080424/..._license_plate

Quote:
Florida drivers can order more than 100 specialty license plates celebrating everything from manatees to the Miami Heat, but one now under consideration would be the first in the nation to explicitly promote a specific religion.

The Florida Legislature is considering a specialty plate with a design that includes a Christian cross, a stained-glass window and the words "I Believe."
I'm ambivalent about this.

On the one hand, it's a voluntary plate: you only get it if you want it enough to pay extra for it. So who cares?

But if they're going to offer a Christian plate, they should also offer a Jewish plate, a Muslim plate, etc., so as to avoid charges of favoring a particular religion.

And then, of course, there's the hypocrisy of the plate's sponsor:

Quote:
Bullard, the plate's sponsor, isn't sure all groups should be able to express their preference. If atheists came up with an "I Don't Believe" plate, for example, he would probably oppose it.
Given all that, my response tends to be "Why?" Florida lawmakers ought to have much better things to waste time on.

I agree that it seems to be a waste of time. If they are going to do that plate I have some other suggestions.

Who gives a crap - For those who don't care what you believe or don't
I'm #1 - For those who have a bloated self-ego
We suck - For Tampa Bay Rays fans
We suck too - For Miami Dolphins fans
I inhaled - For Ricky Williams fans

I'm sure we will get some other quality ideas.

/Christian

I dunno, seems to me the $25.00 fee for a "Christian" plate is better served by a donation to the needy.

They shouldn't offer it unless they're willing to offer plates on demand for all other "religions".

No prob, Herk. I'll let you know when you become a real pain.

I believe the purpose of specialty plates is to make money for the state. They need to be able to sell a certain number of them to make it worthwhile. That's why they might have a college plate for the big colleges but not for the small ones. If they can sell enough atheist/Jewish/Muslim plates, they should offer those too. Then again, I don't see it as promoting religion. I see it purely as a potential moneymaker.

My plates have a horse on them. I wanted a bunny. No fair!

Agreed. If they would disagree with having a plate for Athiests, but not for Christians, it would be hypocrisy at it's best.

Default I got a personalized license plate.

It reads "SZL-53J"

I didn't want anyone to know I was one of those people who paid for personalized plates.

I wouldn't call it a waste of time any more than other vanity plates. It's a way for the state to make money. But agree they should offer plates of other religions.

Isn't liscence plates a free market?

Let them produce whatever little message they want. It's their God-given right to be a dork and tell the whole world they're Christian, athiest, gay, whatever...

It can't be no worse then those "my kids a scholar student" bumper stickers. I want to key the cars of those jackasses.

But I don't, because they might be prolife.
