Default Do the people of the USA support the 40 year Occupation of Paletinian territories?

simple question - and there are many surveys and polls conducted within and outside the USA that reveals some very interesting results concerning what the American people feel about Israel's 40+ year occupation of the Palestinian people.

the majority of people in the USA for example accept Israel as an ally BUT dont support the Occupation of Palestinian territory.

So why does the US government refuse to abide by the wishes of its people and continue to support the Occupation with military supplies and diplomacy through its continual veoting of UN resolutions.

I am assuming that the USA is a democracy - which it isnt.

So its not surprising is it folks

Ah an interesting question. But it's you.

Anyway you answered yourself. The majority of people support them as an ally. They don't like the situation over there, but they certainly don't favor the dissolution of Israel, or hanging them out to dry.

Ah, but the question is if the people of the USA support the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian territory - now running for over 40 years and is the longest continuous Occuaption in the world today.

Whereever you go in the World the answer is similar - people want to see Israel vacate the Occupied territories, stop erecting illegal walls on these lands and recognise Palestinian soverienty.

So why doe the USA provide military and diplomatic aid to Israel AGAINST the wished of its own people?

It is US helicopters, US cluster bombs, US missles that hit civlians in Palestine.

ISrael is also the biggest receiver of foreign US aid - SO what is the US gevernment doing? Who's interests are served by creating and maitaining this mess?

I'm sure there are many things the majority doesn't support, eg. embargo on Cuba, decriminalization of marijuana, corporate welfare....

Although the numbers keep getting closer the majority still don't support legal weed.

And the majority probably don't even know what corporate welfare is, and the majority of the minority probably think the programs are actually on the books as "corporate welfare" as opposed to it being a term Nader made up.

Anyway I'm betting a pool of Americans on the subject would go something like.

DO you support the Israeli occupation of Palestine?

No.

So should Israel turn over control of the area to Hamas?

Wait, those are the bad guys aren't they. That wear the towl hat things. WHy would they give Palestine to them?

They won some election. Now would you say that Israel shouldn't be able to fire back when fired upon from Palestine.

Oh heck No!

You get where I'm going with this.

Also part of the problem is getting the Palestinians to agree. Things like "right of return" can't and won't happen. So while I wish that we had done some more arm twisting in regards to the situation, we'd have to twist both sides at the same time.

Maybe it's because a lot of people support Israel to begin with.

American citizens have made supporting Israel a national policy,
by making candidates say they will support Israel.
how we manifest our support is up to the officials the citizens elect.
citizens like supporting Israel,
and the way to support Israel is by giving them enough weapons and political support to take care of themselves.

no,
but i can see how you could make that mistake.
we're actually an oligarchy

When thinking about American foreign policy, the only two facts you need to understand is that we are religiously insane and intellectually lazy.

After that it's simple to extrapolate:

Bible interpreted as good to support Israel >
America hands over our two biggest stockplies, guns and cash >
We don't care what they do with it, and to question it would be ungodly.

In general, no. I think most Americans agree with my own position; the best solution is for Israel to give the Palestinians their own state.

Quote:

Correct.

Quote:

Because the Palestinians are being (in our view) unreasonable and unwilling to compromise. Also because many (most?) of them support terrorism. Meaning the targeting of civilians.

So while we sympathize with their situation (yes, even a warmonger like me does), we have no choice but to support Israel because of the terrorist methods the Palestinians support.

It is US helicopters, US cluster bombs, US missles that hit civlians in Palestine.
Because they do not deliberately target civilians. The Palestinians do.

I know your yourself do not see a difference, but the rest of the world (including the US) does. Motives matter.

The alternatives are worse.

Sunni Man is correct...we are not going to accept Israel's destruction and we are not going to hang them out to dry. Because Israel is being more reasonable and is more willing to compromise than the other side is.

Quote:

Yep. A majority of us consider Israel an ally. Americans also tend to support the underdog. And Israel...surrounded by enemies on all sides, looks like the underdog.

Israel has the capability to utterly destroy it's enemies if it wants to (Palestine especially), yet they do not. They show restraint despite the fact that they are constantly attacked. That carries a lot of weight with us.

I am an atheist. Explain why I support Israel if what you are saying is true.
