Default Thoughts on States Power vs Federal Power

In my view, states should be given ultimate power in most issues of government. I go as far in my beliefs to say that states should almost be looked at as individual countries. Of course for things like military and monetary policy will be federal issues, but things like individual rights, taxation, and the role of government in general should be decided more locally so the government of the people represents them at a local level. For example, people in Virginia may not want marijuana to be legal, but people in California do. Why have a federal law on an issue like this that differs from different states. What are your thoughts on giving more power to the states?

Very good post

I was going to write "50 individual countries" in my last post on your poll thread, but I left it out lol.

The states need to retain their power. It makes me sad to constantly see it get stripped away and handed over the the federal government. The states have most of the power in this country, and that's something that a lot of people fail to realize. It's really disheartening to vote in state elections and seeing 50 people there. Waiting in line for 1-2 minutes and then being able to vote.

I don't think people realize just how much power the states have and are granted. I don't think people actually know the contents of their state's constitution. I bet even fewer know when their last state constitution convention was.

I forsee a future of the federal government taking control of nearly all aspects of our lives... and that will be a sad day. It will no longer be the United States of America, it'll just be America.

It seems like every time there is a crisis or problem, the solution is always more government. The problem is government is usually the cause of the crisis. What we need is a freer society with less government.

This is what the Constitution supposedly guaranteed:

The 10th amendment says: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

Unless the states' laws violate the US Constitution, it should be decided by the states, where the power is closer to the people and they have more of a voice in their lawmaking. That is more of a democracy.

But Big Government as we have it now and as we will have it more so according to Obama and Pelosi and Reid, make this amendment mute.

I agree it's better to let states to decide their own thinng themselves, not decided by the federal government.States know their own thing better than the federal government, and they will do better if they have more control over their own thing. And a federal government with too much control is very evil.

Good post. The democrats are definitely about to go on a big government spree when they get all this power.

fed power > state power. state power is fine as long as its constitutional.

Well the Constitution tends to agree with the state having the power on most issues. After all, anything not discussed in the Constitution is delegated to the states by the 10th Amendment. The Constitution really just gives the federal government the power in national military, control of currency, and postal services.
