FYI, Les Brownlee served two combat tours in Vietnam as an Army infantryman and won 2 Silver Stars and 3 Bronze Stars.
Let's see what who the Bush Administration replaces him with....

Default Kaaaching!

And the new Secretary of the Army is.... Francis Harvey!

Quote:

Harvey, a Los Gatos resident, sits on the board of Bridge Bank of Silicon Valley and is a member of the board of regents of Santa Clara University. But it's a safe bet that neither of these gigs placed him in the running for the Army's senior civilian post.

Harvey is former chief operating officer for a division of Westinghouse Electric, a leading defense contractor, and serves on the boards of two Carlyle-affiliated firms.

Carlyle is a high-power Washington investment firm that counts among its leaders and advisers former Defense Secretary Frank Carlucci, former Secretary of State James Baker and, until last year, former President George H.W. Bush, who happens to be the father of the current president.

Most prominently, he's vice chairman of Maryland's Duratek, which specializes in the handling and disposing of radioactive materials.

Huh, so the new Secretary of the Army is a defense contractor executive.
I'm sure he'll do a fine job.

Personally, I expect someone who has lived the warrior culture.

I have nothing against pencilneck beanpushers since counting beans is a good skill to have in the managerial level. There are plenty of former soldiers that now have the beancounting skill... however this Harvey has never been a soldier. How can he properly relate to the kids in uniform when he has never been one himself?

Here is an example of how the former Secretary of the Army was able to relate to the soldiers:

Quote:
Brownlee, a silver-haired native of Texas who served two combat tours in Vietnam as an Army infantryman and won two Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars, has cut a low public profile over the past 18 months although he has faced many problems that arose from the war in Iraq.

In October 2003, for example, the Army was rocked by complaints at Fort Stewart, Ga., that sick or injured reservists on the base were getting substandard medical treatment and housing. Following his instincts, Brownlee flew to Fort Stewart and made a firsthand assessment. He recalls that he was advised not to go and not to meet with reporters if he did go.

He ignored that advice and took a dim view of the attitude of one general he met in Georgia who told him that living conditions for the reservists were "spartan" but could not be called "squalor."

"Let me tell you one thing we're not going to do," Brownlee recalls telling the general. "We're not going to try to defend ourselves by trying to explain the difference between `squalor' and `spartan.'"

Brownlee announced at Fort Stewart that the Army would do whatever it took to improve the living conditions there, and the controversy quickly died down.

Can Harvey relate in kind? I doubt it.. it's probably all numbers and profit to him.

Default 3 years later... Francis Harvey resigns in wake of scandal

Nope, apparently Harvey could not relate to the sacrifices our troops have to make.

Army Secretary Resigns in Wake of Walter Reed Outpatient-Care Shortfalls
By Kathleen T. Rhem
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, March 2, 2007 – Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates announced this afternoon that he has accepted the resignation of Army Secretary Francis J. Harvey in light of allegations of shortfalls in care of outpatients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center here.
Published reports in February shed light on shortcomings in outpatient care for troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Army officials announced yesterday that the hospital commander, Maj. Gen. George W. Weightman, had been relieved of duty.

In announcing that Harvey had resigned, Gates expressed disappointment that Army leaders were not taking the situation seriously enough. “I am disappointed that some in the Army have not adequately appreciated the seriousness of the situation pertaining to outpatient care at Walter Reed,” he said in a brief statement at the Pentagon. “Some have shown too much defensiveness and have not shown enough focus on digging into and addressing the problems.”

He also said he is concerned that some Army leaders hadn’t communicated well enough that caring for wounded troops is their top priority. “Addressing (troops’ and their families’) concerns about the quality of their outpatient experience is critically important,” Gates said. “Our wounded soldiers and their families have sacrificed much, and they deserve the best we can offer.” In contrast to his criticism of Army leaders, Gates praised the medical staff at Walter Reed for “their professionalism and dedication to providing caring treatment.”

“From what I have learned, the problems at Walter Reed appear to be problems of leadership,” he said “The Walter Reed doctors, nurses and other staff are among the best and the most caring in the world. They deserve our continued deepest thanks and strongest support.”

Harvey had been secretary of the Army since Nov. 19, 2004. Gates announced that Undersecretary of the Army Pete Geren will serve as acting secretary until a new secretary is in place. Geren served as acting secretary of the Air Force from July to November 2005.

Army officials announced after Gates' news conference that Maj. Gen. Eric R. Schoomaker will be the new commander of Walter Reed Army Medical Center and North Atlantic Regional Medical Command. Schoomaker currently is the commanding general of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command at Fort Detrick, Md.

I have only one question.

Do you think this (the whole thing on all levels) a new problem?

Obviously not a new problem since the Bush admin selected Harvey back in 2004.. someone who was not fit for the job as has been pointed out back then.

Kudos to the Washington Post on this one, for reporting in some depth the conditions. The question is why does it take the American public being informed of these things for the government to take action? Abu Grahib wasn't an issue until it became public, for instance. In this case, if administration officials bothered to visit wounded troops on a regular basis near their home, they'd be able to see for themselves the sub-standard conditions.

I guess the Washington Post is aiding al Qaeda by reporting on this.

Quote:
Behind the door of Army Spec. Jeremy Duncan's room, part of the wall is torn and hangs in the air, weighted down with black mold. When the wounded combat engineer stands in his shower and looks up, he can see the bathtub on the floor above through a rotted hole. The entire building, constructed between the world wars, often smells like greasy carry-out. Signs of neglect are everywhere: mouse droppings, belly-up cockroaches, stained carpets, cheap mattresses.

I asked if you thought this entire "scandal" was a new thing on all levels..and you reply with....

Quote:

LOL

1994 1984 1974 1964 1954 1944 1934 1924 1914... 1909

Take your pick.

Tell your Democrat representatives running around flapping thier lips to shove their sudden intertest/caring for the troops blame it on Bush BS up their butts.

Nobody gives a (*)(*)(*)(*) Ted they care atm for poltical reason..Democrats see a scandal they can milk to get attention off their failure to casue the USA to run home and surrender.

..and every Far Lefty that claims NEOCONS don' care can shove it up their butts as well. Beasue if their one crowd that sure as hell doesn't give a (*)(*)(*)(*) about US soldiers except to use them its that one.

Whats mssing here is one of these Generals during one of the hearings standing up slamming hs fist on the table and telling all those self righteous pricks in the house and senate that for decades they have been told these things....follwoed by enough beeps that the censor machine breaks ending with a good full middle finger and him stomping out on them.

Maybe that will still happen.
Both parties and eveyrone else ever involed with that hospital or ANY military/VA hospital who plays politics with this is a horses posterior.
