Default A Brief Question

I was back in the states recently, and while passing the standard border bureaucracy (surprisingly painless this time) I noticed something interesting.

All the signs, papers, forms read "United States". Nothing wrong with this, but unless my memory serves me wrong, your august country is called the "United States of America". I was just surprised that even the official forms did not use this name.

Is the full name used anywhere? For mostly the US or United States is used, at least where I saw it.

Any insight?

PS: The entrance forms still crack me up, every time. Have you, or your family, ever participated in the Nazi persecution during the years 1933-1945, or been a member of the communist party?

Default Shorter?

I'm just going to take a stab at this and say its just easier and more convienant to use US or United States, than United States of America.

Haha, and like anyone would say if they had...or would they?

I may be wrong, but I think we now have a similar statement to weed out the terrorists when applying for a green card. Something like, "Have you, or your family, ever partipated in a terrorist organization, or in a terrorist act on the United States*"

*Saying yes does not necessarily mean your application will be denied

Default Does it REALLY matter?

Okay, yea, kinda funny that they don't use America. But, I think we are pretty prideful! I'm not goin all "treasonist" here, its just that wait, isn't CANADIA part of America too? and they don't make a deal about it! They don't care! Does it matter? I mean, we're still the same country, right? Beisdes, when we care about that, the BIGGER issues start to be left behind.

SORRY AND THANK YOU

Default -

It's actually the United Mexican States...

...anyway, I'm just wondering when the government decided to drop the "of America" part off completely.

The best part of all.
Are you planning to overthrow the US government? Check!

I probably won't be visiting the States again for a long time now that they demand fingerprints from practically all foreigners. I'll stick to my Old World, thank you very much.
