Guess we fallin' outta favor with the Russkies...

Anti-Americanism plays in Russia
July 3, 2009 : President Obama is to visit Russia next week, but US hopes to 'reset' ties with Moscow may run into the problem that being in opposition to America is a stance that serves the Kremlin.
Quote:
When President Obama visits the Kremlin next week, he will face the task of trying to reset relations with a government that has built its power base and defined itself by its anti-American, neo-Cold War stance. It's an opportune moment for America to warm up a frosty relationship. Moscow could help on some of Washington's most intransigent foreign policy troubles, including Afghanistan, Iran and North Korea. But in Russia, there is scant evidence of a desire for a fresh start.

Despite a reshuffle of power that installed Russian leader Vladimir Putin as prime minister and his career underling, Dmitry Medvedev, in the presidency, the Kremlin's policies remain unchanged, including its habit of drumming up anti-American sentiment to bolster political power at home. Shortly after it warmly welcomed Obama to the White House, the Kremlin lavished a $2-billion loan on the government of impoverished Kyrgyzstan, which in turn evicted the U.S. military from a base considered strategically important to the war in Afghanistan. Orchestrated in Moscow, the power play cost the United States months of embarrassment and a rent increase of more than $40 million to persuade Kyrgyzstan to reverse its decision.

Russia risks destabilization on its borders if the war in Afghanistan further deteriorates. And on Friday, a senior official said the Kremlin would allow the U.S. to ship weapons headed for Afghanistan across Russian territory. But analysts said Moscow still feels a compulsion to interfere with U.S. goals. Anti-Americanism, some say, has deep roots in Russia's view of itself, its insecurities and aspirations to become a superpower once more. "Domestic politics is very much grounded on opposition to the West," said Denis Volkov, a researcher at Moscow's Levada Center who has conducted polls on Russian attitudes toward America. "It's very often used as an excuse, as a pillar of the popularity of Russian leaders and as the proof of the rebirth of Russian power."

I'm sure President Obama will apologize for 'the sins of America'.

Russians view US more positively after Obama: Poll
3 Jul 2009, Russians' attitudes towards the United States have improved significantly since the election of US President Barack Obama, according to a poll released on Friday, ahead of Obama's trip to Moscow next week.
Quote:
Forty-six per cent of Russians surveyed in the new poll had a positive view of the United States, compared to only 22 per cent last September, the Russian Public Opinion Research Centre said in a statement. "The attitudes of Russians to the United States warmed substantially after the change of presidents in America," said the Moscow-based polling centre, which is also known by its Russian initials VTsIOM.

Obama, who is due to visit Moscow on July 6-8, was elected last November after promising to improve the United States's image in the world which had been battered by the unpopular policies of his predecessor, George W Bush. The poll conducted by VTsIOM on June 27-28 found that 46 per cent of Russians said they viewed the United States positively, 33 per cent viewed it negatively and 22 per cent of those surveyed could not answer.

By comparison, a similar poll conducted in September 2008 -- at a time when US-Russian ties were badly strained by the war in Georgia -- 22 per cent had a favourable view of the United States while 65 per cent viewed it negatively.

No, there were better options. The Soviet Union proposed a democratic, neutral Germany, pretty much like Austria. Germany in an Eastern Alliance would have been good, too.

These were areas of Poland at this time and they are areas of Poland now.

It is no stretch at all, it was the first time, Germany attacked a souvereign country after WWII. Serbia was not hostile to us and there was no provocation. Germany acted Hitler style again.

As I have traveled to a few different countries I have noticed that most do like Americans once they get past the generalities. In Korea and in Japan I was usually met with suspicion at first and a kind of mild hostility. If I never said anything at all it probably would have been left at that. However, I tend to be fairly outgoing around other cultures out of pure curiosity. I tend to engauge in conversation about culture because I am fascinated by our differences rather than appauled by them as many people are. This usually breaks the ice and my general interest in their culture is usually met with the same level of interest in my culture.

I have been denied entry into bars in Korea and Japan just for being American. Infact, most bars will not allow me in. I was surprised to find this out that even here in Misawa there are bars almost right outside the gate that practice this open policy of discrimination. I can understand it to a point. Many young American soldiers and airmen have cast a bad image of the US into the minds of these people by being loud or simply just being American and not understanding the Japanese culture. However, I find that its the fault of both Japanese and Americans for not understanding each other. I know that we are on Japanese soil so we are guests here. I still don't think it excuses the discrimination. I don't think anyone would accept it in the US if we were to openly discriminate against foreign visitors, wanted or not, in our country.

I have been surprised several times. I wondered into a few bars and sat down not realizing they do not allow americans. After a few drinks and talking to some of the people that work there and some of the customers I found they accepted me once they saw I was not the typical american soldier/airman. Or at least not what they thought the typical solder/airman was. I was at a bar this past weekend just like this. I sat down, had a few drinks. Flirted with some of the girls at the bar and sang some Kareoke. It was not until I was about to leave that the girl I was flirting with told me that the bar owner usually does not allow americans in the bar. Im guessing the fact that I was alone and not in a big group of loud americans helped and that I showed genuine interest in the culture. I have learned only a few japanese words, but it seems to go far when I speak them. I can sense a genuine appreciation when I thank and greet them in Japanese.

It seems to me that as long as your willing to make an effort to understand and respect their culture, they will forgive your mistakes if you happen to accidently do somthing offensive. Many times I have had a good laugh with them rather than maybe an offensive stare I would have gotten if I had portraid the Ugly American steriotype.

So the answer is, you will find that all cultures are accepting of Americans if you are willing to make the effort to understand them.

I don't think any nationalities dislike Americans as people.

But bearing in mind, we judge by what we know (rightly or wrongly) I do think many nationalities dislike the American Federal Government because of their effect on the rest of the world, and dislike the attitudes of some Americans as espoused on forums like this.
