The Tuskegee Airmen were not suppose to succeed. A 1925 study by the Army War College titled, "The use of Negro Manpower in War" concluded that Black men, "were cowards and poor technicians and fighters, lacking initiative and resourcefulness." It also called them a, "subspecies of human population."

The sad thing about that is there are many out there today in 2007 that still feel the same way.

As a retired member of the USAF who was born after these brave men served their nation I can only say that it is about time and it's too bad that most are already dead.

It is a shame that in the South many of the Tuskegee Airmen where not allowed to be buried in Veteran or municipal cemetaries because of the white only restriction.

PS To those of you on this forum who have stated that I am "mean" by bringing up racism in the South I am not it is aa sad fact.

First, all americans owe the Tuskegee Airmen a debt of gratitude for their service in WWII.

However, there are some widespread historical distortions regarding them.

1. It is said they never lost a bomber to enemy aircraft, but whites did. This has been exposed as false - see eg

2. Secondly, it is customary to brag about their record vs. the german pilots. It is never mentioned that the plane the TA's flew from mid-1944 onward, that is to say, for the great part of the european campaign, was the P-51, the superior fighter plane of WWII and vastly superior in speed, armor, and armament to the Me-109, the standard fighter of the Luftwaffe.

JAKE Sayeth The distribution of the Mustang (P51) and specifically the D model was distributed to the Tuskegee airmen just about the time frame as other units. Also remember that the Fighter Squadrons flew the P40 and also the P47. The P47 was more of a ground support fighter than a air superiority fighter ( relevtively speaking). Therefore I am not sure exactly what your point is regarding the P51 and the Fighter Squadrons ?

As a history buff I am curious. I also must admit that it was not until long after I retired from the AirForce that I actually learned something about the Tusgekkees !!! But better late than never !!

JAKE says I think that reasonable people understood this as a myth but so what that does not take away from what the Tuskegees did under the worst of conditions and opposition from racist Senators and their White comrads in arms, so to speak !!!
