Default Veteran's (Armistice) Day

I've noticed over the years that Veteran's Day seems to be fading from the public consciousness. Most people get six holidays off from work - Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, along with Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

Some Federal and state workers get Dr. King's birthday off, President's Day, and Veteran's Day, but most people don't.

I think that Veteran's Day should be a holiday - but only if you are a veteran (or active/reserve military). If you've been discharged from the military with anything besides a Bad Conduct or Dishonorable discharge, you should get to take Veteran's Day off as a holiday. And, if you aren't a veteran - too bad for you!

I've been thinking about writing my Congressman about this idea - anyone have any comments/critique/suggestions?

Liberals have tried more and more to make this day in to a day of activisim. Its sad really. And americans dont respect our vets as much as they used to. Colleges bann ROTC, Liberals demostrate in front of recruiting stations, the new york times accuses our vets as becoming murderers, A washington state paper ran a fake tape of our troops rapeing an Iraqi girl, Democrats despeeratly try to block absontee ballots that came in from Iraq, The speaker of the house refuses to speak to the "vets for victory" organisation, Harry reid said that the war is lost while our troops are fighting it, John Murtha called innocent marines murderers, Columbia university let a man speak at their college while he was killing our troops in Iraq, liberal protestors burn american flags while wearing che guvera t shirts and orange jump suits as sympothy for our detained enemys, and I can go all day but you get my point!

Only allowing veterans to take that day off won't spread awareness. Y0ou might think that somehow this is an incentive to encourage more military enlistment, but it would not work. The culture needs to rediscover the honor associated with the militaries of the past in order for Veteran's Day to rise in status.

I wasn't doing it to spread awareness, I was doing it because I want a day off with pay!

My mistake for thinking you were vitruous. Sorry. I'll never do it again.

Actually, that was meant tongue-in-cheek - sorry I didn't make that clear enough.

I think that on top of everything that we do and could do for the veterans of the armed services, that one day a year that they - and they alone - could have off from work as a token of this country's appreciation wouldn't be such a bad thing!

I don't think it would be of much use as a recruiting tool, but I do think that over time it could be used to raise awareness of veterans and veterans issues.

Works for me.
However I would anticipate a non-Veteran suing for discrimination or something along those lines. It might create more derision rather than awareness.

Personally though, I think it's a good idea.
