Default al Qaeda leader in Iraq killed(al-Askari planner)

US 'kills' key Iraq shrine bomber

US troops in Iraq say they have killed an al-Qaeda leader who masterminded the attacks on a Shia shrine that led to a major escalation in sectarian violence.

Officials say Haitham al-Badri was behind the 2006 and 2007 attacks on the al-Askari shrine in Samarra, which destroyed its golden dome and minarets.

The US said al-Badri was the leader of al-Qaeda in Salahuddin province.

The US claim came as mortar attacks killed at least 11 people in the eastern part of the capital, Baghdad.

According to US officials, Mr al-Badri was killed on Thursday during a US operation east of Samarra.

Unconfirmed reports say he was killed in an air strike.

U.S. Airstrikes Target Taliban
Across Southern Afghanistan
Associated Press
August 3, 2007 5:50 p.m.

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- U.S.-led airstrikes hit a Taliban gathering in volatile southern Afghanistan and killed at least three senior figures of the militant group, government officials said Friday.

Local officials and doctors said dozens of wounded were brought to hospitals, one of them an eight-year-old boy. The attacks in Helmand province's Baghran district struck militants who had gathered to watch the hanging of two men accused by the Taliban of spying for the government, said Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi, the Defense Ministry spokesman.

The ministry said its intelligence reports indicated three militant leaders, including Taliban commander for Helmand province Mullah Rahim, were among those killed Thursday. The Taliban commander for all of southern Afghanistan, Dadullah Mansoor, was at the scene but his fate was not immediately known, Mr. Azimi said.

This is great. But you are always so bloody happy to jump on the "we're making headway in the ME" bandwagon that it makes me queezy JP. I appreciate your enthusiasm, but as someone living with Islam all around, let me explain the issue. One of the tennants of Islam is Jihad. It's both a personal and physical fight for Islam. It is commanded of every Muslem male able to fight. Maybe this will make it easier ...
"Classification by Islamic scholars
Ibn Rushd, in his Muqaddimāt, divides Jihad into four kinds:

"Jihad by the heart; Jihad by the tongue; Jihad by the hand and Jihad by the sword." He defines "Jihad by the tongue" as "to commend good conduct and forbid the wrong, like the type of Jihad Allah (swt) ordered us to fulfill against the hypocrites in His Words, “O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites” (Qur'an [Qur'an 9:73]). So the Prophet (s) strove against the unbelievers by sword and against the hypocrites by tongue[1]"

You are the "unbeliever" .. as am I. So "the prophet" strove against you by sword .. and so will his followers. In other words, this hunt and kill mission did good, but let's not get too overjoyed. There is already somone who has taken over these leaders' place. You can "surge" all you want, but in the end, all you have done is cost the US more.

Question for you JP. Where do you think that all these hundreds of billions of $ to cover the cost of this war come from ?! The US already has a defecit, so where do you really think it comes from and who do you really think pays for it ?

Your quotation from the Holy Koran sounds kind of scary, but I believe there are a considerable number of Muslim intellectuals who would argue that today's radical, militant Jihadists are the real hypocrites...if they dared to speak out.

Default Ahhh

Somehow Wikipedia doesn't quite count as scholarly material. However, brush it off all you want, but Jihad coupled with the concept of Dar al Islam and horendous stories of Miuslem brutality from the Hadit not to mention Muhamed's personal behavior, and yes, I believe it's pretty easy to claim that the Koran calls for violence against the Kafirs. There is a (*)(*)(*)(*)ed good reason that Islam has the bad rep it has. I would love to see more of the moderate leaders speak up and actually have a grass roots effect. I have yet to really see that.
