Straight and level it's the Ta 152, the Germans used nitrous oxide to boost power...

though the F4-U Corsair was very fast also...

In a dive, the P-47 could approach the speed of sound.

I said level flight just to take my fav the P-47 out of the competition. In reality, I didn't know, but I wanted someone else to look for me!

so some quick research and some tentative speeds
    P-38 443 mph
    Ta-152 472 mph
    Spitfire MkIX 452 mph
    P-47N 467 mph
    P-47M 473 mph

Shocked me- but from what I found- the P-47M was the fastest that saw combat.

French ace Pierre Clostermann claimed the first Allied combat encounter with a Pfeil in April 1945. In his book The Big Show (pages 273-274) he describes leading a flight of four Hawker Tempests from No. 3 Squadron RAF over northern Germany, when he intercepted a lone Do 335 flying at maximum speed at treetop level. Detecting the British aircraft, the German pilot reversed course to evade. Despite the Tempest's considerable low altitude speed, the RAF fighters were not able to catch up or even get into firing position.'

I had forgotten the DO335! Let's call that the winner, if nothing else for bringing up another favorite oddity of the ww2 airwar.

Nope...though that was the largest one built.

Remember, I said 'planned'; not 'built'.
